World's larger sports bar vs other Louisville restaurants

by Ellen P » Sun Nov 21, 2010 10:40 pm

How are restaurants away from town center doing on UL bball, concert nights, now that the world's largest sports bar is open? (credit to Eric Crawford for that one and it fits perfectly)
We stick our head in the restaurants when we arrive - 1 1/2 to 2 hours early and they are all on at least an hour wait. We usually have a BBC beer then head into the arena. Before MMJ, we parked past the Bristol, so we ate there, at the bar. One recent game - can't remember if it were men or womens, there was room at the bar on the 2nd floor so we had appetizers finally at the BBC.
Are restaurants along Frankfort Ave/the Highlands etc seeing a drop in business on these nights - especially on a weekend? Or is there enough business to go around? I hope so. If we have time, we'll stop somewhere else on the way in, but on a week night we can't.
We'll be back to Frankfort Ave. Friday night - Trolley Hop.

Hi Ellen, I have been wondering the same thing but haven’t inquired about business with friends who work outside of the downtown district. I work at the BBC on 4th and we haven’t seen a change either way.

I think we are all happy those local business owners ventured and took a chance on Main/Mark Street and surrounding streets, it gives visitors from other cities a chance to experience more of Louisville than just the hubbub corporate flash of 4th Street Live.

The local businesses just south of 4th Street live still depend on conventions, Palace and Brown Shows and lunch biz from surrounding corporate establishments. Now that convention season is slowing down and the weather has dampened our patio biz it is like a ghost town on South 4th Street at times during the evening. Sapporo, newly renovated and beautiful Theater Square Marketplace along with BBC 4th on Theater Square, Cunningham’s, Safier’s and Sicilian among others offer some great alternatives to the congestion of the Main Street establishments and Arena crowds. Also, mentioning that there are some very high caliber chefs working at these places under the radar. Our initial thought was that this area would reap the benefits for alternative parking and congestion the Arena would possibly cause but until it opened no one knew for sure. To the Arena’s credit they have planned well for masses who attend the events downtown (this is a good thing). The biggest issue for our businesses that I constantly come across is the question about parking though there are two parking structures very conveniently located on south 3rd (Brown Hotel) and 5th Street which is free after 8 in the evening. Now, if we could just get the Trolley to be consistent. :D
