Hells Kitchen Interview

by Susanne Smith » Thu Nov 11, 2010 5:42 pm

Just wondered if there was a crowd of chefs... I know that actual participants cannot talk about the interview process, but just wondering.. I was disqualified for a pesky misdemeanor from years ago. Seems unfair, and I cant help but believe that of all the cast members over the years that none of them had a misdemeanor on their records. Just saying. I want some gossip. Please. Honestly, I was one of those chefs who stood in line (somewhat) only to be saddled at the "interview" with a drunk, an over the top ass clown and his side-kick......effing waste of time (5 hours!!). They want mindless drones and no one with any chops.....God forbid anyone should show up the MAN with 3 Michelin stars...... (no interview, they are just trolling the dregs for ratings when it airs). On to Top Chef..............!!!

No luck for the Gumbo Chef either. I was grouped with 3 culinary students from Indy, only one of those got an instant callback. They said up front they were casting for TV personality not cooking skills. I did get to meet some nice out of town chefs while in line and got to hang with Marsha; Clancy you didn't recognize me, but the last time we met I had hair. :P Had it not wasted 5 good hours of a work day, it would have been fun.

Not saying that HK's show would be on my top 50 list of shows to watch but worked with a former contestant(season 5), Chef Paula DeSilva (from Ocean 3030, Fort Lauderdale, now Miami) at Epcot and Boca Raton this year. She has good talent, skills and down to earth.

Even after taking the day off for this, I bitched out and spent the better part of the day doing some much needed yard work. Although it would have been cool hanging out with the people I know that were there, I'm glad I didn't go because I'm not all that camera friendly :D

Bill...I've watched that show a time or two and my advice would be to kick that misdemeanor up to a 3rd degree felony, don't shave or brush your hair for three or four days oh and half a dozen tats might help the cause as well.

Thanks for the input. I'm really glad I didn't waste my time. I thought about lying on the application form, but with twenty years of sobriety under my belt, the honesty thing kicked in....I agree with "Top Chef", or for that matter my favorite of all "Chopped" would be the best bet to apply for. I just hope none of us are ever on "Kitchen Nightmares". They get some real losers on Hells Kitchen and sometimes kick off the best for little or no reason. With that said, best of luck to all who applied. I hope someone we know made it on. Bill

Wouldn't twenty years of sobriety (congratulations!) disqualify you?

If they did, they couldn't tell. They would be contractually obligated to remain mum. They were very clear about NOT publishing any information for public dissemination about your audition or status thereof. Posting on facebook, blogs, or message boards would immediately disqualify you from participating.

Post Script...I know of two peeps who used to work for me who got a "call back" from this and I wish them only the best as they are both good people and won't be taking any un-called for BS from Mr. Ramsay.....Good luck you two! Represent!!

Stopped in at the Waffle House near Sullivan for a quick breakfast the other day. A group of culinary students were seated near my table. One of the students was loudly talking to her server about how she had been cast on the show.

Better hope that stays in Waffle House, if FOX finds out, its un-cast.

or she was not telling the truth.

I'm 99% sure you have to sign a contract that says you no tell.
