I believe you are talking about the Red Barn on UL campus where they do small to-do's, or at least they did 15 years ago when I was in college.

Small venue, they MAY cater something in for an event, but to my knowledge they do not have a kitchen.

Way back in the day, I saw a lot of bands there too. Has it really been 20 years ago?

I hope U of L's Red Barn is still there. So many things have changed on campus. I was by the old Masterson's site the other day, and a hole in the ground was there. Strange and sad.

The Red Barn was also a fast food restaurant sort of place when I was growing up, similar to the Cow Palace, I think.

Welcome to the forum, Gordon! You'll find a few other folks here who can remember U of L back in the day when you could pop out of Gardiner Hall or Social Sciences and jump across Shipp Street to the Cardinal Inn ...

The Red Barn is pretty much the same now as it was "back in the day". Concerts, movies, etc. WFPK does a live lunch from there about once a month or so.

Wasn't it run by the same George family that has Cunninghams and other enterprises around town?

I remember the old Cardinal Inn, but I don't know anything about their association with the original Cunningham's. Cunningham's is like Kunz's. You can't move an institution. Cunningham's survives, but it lost the atmosphere when it moved into that sterile parking garage on 4th, across from the Palace. Kunz's lost it's atmosphere, too, when it moved to it's now defunct location, in the parking garage at 4th and Market. Bottom line is name and history won't carry it unless the food is alive.

The original Cardinal Inn offered the best on-campus breakfast menu during my undergrad tenure, in the mid-late '70's. But, if I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Red Barn moved from its initial location (on the other side of Floyd St.) and underwent some renovation...it doesn't look quite like the original Red Barn.

PER ROBIN'S POST (supra)...I do recall that some members of the George family owned/operated the old Cardinal Inn at one time.
