Quite possibly the best pizza and burger in town

So on football Sunday's we hang out and watch the Browns at this little place called "The New Direction" (intersection of Old LaGrange Rd and Chamberlain Ln). Other than being a nondescript blue collar bar the place may very well hold claim to some of the best pizza and one of the best burgers in Louisville.

The burger, a nice thick hand formed patty, is right up there with Shady Lane (which I love) or any of the other places that always get mentioned whenever the subject of burgers comes up...It's a rock star. The pizza, which they just started making about two months ago is the absolute bomb. When they first started doing pizza they were good but over the past month they've continued to improve...To the point where I don't know if there is a better pie in Louisville. I know, I know...pretty strong claim for a blue collar beer joint that just got into the pizza business...but trust me on this one. It is a DAMN fine pie. The crust, the sauce and the toppings are all spot on...MOF I was told by the owners that one of the proprietors of one of the local pizza chains declared it the "best pizza in town".

Seriously, ya'll need to give this pizza and burger a try. They rock. Oh...and they may also have one of the best fish sandwiches in town too (Lake Erie Yellow Perch)...all it it...gooooood stuff.

I went there a while back to hear a band play and grab a snack. It was a nice place and would recommend people checking it out.

It's just a good old fashioned Blue collar American pie...Nothing "New York" or California Foo-Foo about it. Nice selection of "standard toppings"...Asking for fresh spinach, sprouts, artichokes or Feta cheese on your pizza will earn you a big fat "no" not to mention a few stares from up and down the bar.

I think they call their burger (what else) The New Direction Burger. Nice...very nice bun, choice of cheeses, fresh toppings, perfectly proportioned (not one of these 3/4 pound "he man" burgers) and nothing really "fancy" just a really good old fashioned burger.

Recommend sitting at the bar, some of the stools at the high tops are a wee uncomfortable. BTW, I know they serve at least until 11pm, probably later...if ya go on a Monday ya takes yer chances with the Karaoke thing going on.

Seriously...it's good pie and a good burger.

I agree with Steve that the burger is very good. I would call it a classic "bar"style.The burger was cooked rare to mid and dressed with the appropriate amount of toppings,not too much, not too little.I was not sold on the pizza,but that was a while ago. We plan on going back for the Erie Perch.

The fish sandwich is awesome. Lake Erie (Yellow) Perch is "imported" from Ohio and the thin fillets are fried nice and crisp in a thin breading and served up on a nice bun ("toasted please") with lettuce, tomato and tater sauce...it is a far cry from a hunk of Cod placed between two pieces of plain floppy rye bread.. So not your typical "Green River" style sandwich but it certainly holds some appeal, especially for transplants like me who grew up loving this type of sammich.

BTW, did I mention the pizza and burgers ROCK

I visited New Direction with Steve and his lovely wife Becky to watch my Steelers beat up on the Browns. I had one of the personal sized pizzas and must agree that it was pretty dern tasty. Steve gave me a little hunk of his Perch and it reminded me of Walleye. It was tasty as well.

One of the most important things that I feel Steve failed to mention in his glowing endorsement of New Direction, is how cheap it is. I had a pizza, got hungry again at halftime, had a grilled cheese and a drank a bucket of cheap domestic beer and I think I only spent 20 bucks!

Indeed on both counts Dano...Your Steelers did put an old fashioned butt pounding on my Browns that day -and- it's an inexpensive place to eat. They kinda cater to the folks from the nearby Ford plant, so they keep the prices pretty reasonable. In addition to the fore mentioned they also do a pretty good (and damn cheap) "Blue Plate Special" for lunches during the week...It's usually not rock star caliber but it's filling and it'll run ya about 5 bucks. The last time I was in around lunch I had the 'special' (pot roast, mashed taters, green beans and a small salad), drank a a Coke, bought the two guys beside me a beer, tipped the bar tender 5 bucks and STILL got out of there for a mere 20 bucks. A medium pie with three toppings will run ya about 10 or 11 bucks, the burger (with fries) is around 7 bucks.

BTW, the beer list tends toward domestic but you can get a few other beers in a bottle...Bass, Guinness, I believe I've seen some of the Great Lakes products, etc.

Dan, you are aware that walleye is a member of the perch family? Got to go get me some of that.

... Good one A-man...I deserved that.

Just to correct a couple of things...I checked and they no longer do the "Blue Plate Special". Adding the pizza oven to the kitchen apparently took up a lot of room. Also the burger and fries are 5.95 and not 7-something as I had said before.

The pizza box had a good beer list. We'd pop in for a bite and a brew before going to Tinseltown.

Pizza Box was in another location. They were off of Murphy Lane. I think it is now called Shannon's. I never go there because they only have a beer license and I am a bourbon or rum fan. New Direction is located in the strip center that has Buffalo Wings and Rings in it closer to Highway 146 and I-265.

I spent many a nights at New Direction after we closed the pizza shop in Crestwood for the night, the staff and I would head up for a few drinks.

Edit to add : Pizza Box moved from Murphy Lane to a new building behind Home Depot and was there for about a year before they were forced to close their doors. Guessing that they have been closed for about 6 years now.
