Am I the only one with "milk" issues?

by RTaglieri » Mon Oct 25, 2010 7:34 pm

When I eat at home, I almost always have a glass of milk with my meals, but for some reason, I refuse to drink milk at restaurants.

I believe this is because when I was young, I worked in a restaurant and milk was served in these giant "bladders" that were hooked into a chilled dispensing machine. That always grossed me out.

However, I think my one big hangup with drinking milk in restaurants is I always like to see the expiration date of the gallon itself and you cannot see that while dining out. At first, I thought it was just me, but really never see anyone drinking it except sometimes at breakfast.

So, my question is whether drinking milk has just gone out of style itself or does anyone else feel this way? Also, I would ask restaurant people how much milk they sell in a given week vs. other beverages When I go to the grocery store, milk is always well stocked so I cannot believe no one simply thinks it is a bad choice with a meal.

What say the people?

Dont ever go to Canada. You wont be able to drink their bagged milk.

I get it. I too am wary of dairy. Heck, anytime we have pre-shredded bagged cheese (rarely) I am always looking in there for that little spec of green mold that I know is hiding on the underside of a shred. I only do that because I've accidentally eaten some green cheese from not checking...

But I am willing to trust that when I eat out, if I choose dairy, somebody back there is running quality control for me (not to say I don't still take a whiff of the glass when it comes out).

Milk is just wrong in general. We are the only creatures on the planet that drink another animal's lactation. I think if people weren't conditioned to drink it as kids they would find it as unappealing as drinking a big glass of human breast milk (which would actually be more natural). Milk just creeps me out.

My wife grew up on a dairy farm and refuses to drink milk because she says she knows too much about where it has been. That pretty much takes me off of it, too. :P

But that doesn't keep us off cheese or yogurt or ice cream or whipped cream, so go figure ...

I drink it. I like it.

As for having milk outside my home, I often only have it at breakfast time; since the higher use will less likely be spoiled.

-I'm going to have my Oreos and breastmilk before going to bed.

By that logic we are also the only animals that cook our food, so cooking is also "wrong in general" and we should all go out for a good graze or perhaps some raw flesh????

maybe the sushi trend is trying to tell us something...

Oh don't get me wrong... once you change it's form, it's fine. It's the raw state the bothers me. Much like I wouldn't eat raw eggs or uncooked bacon. Pasteurization or not, milk is just a big glass of animal juice.

To be fair tomato juice is just a big glass of...well..tomato juice. Squeeze a cow, squeeze a tomato, is all the same...

To be fair, I'd add some vodka to that tomato juice.
