Grannys Grub

by Steve Shade » Sun Oct 24, 2010 7:23 pm

I stopped at a place called "Grannys Grub. It is on a small trailer in Jeffersontown

I didn't buy anything from him because I had leftovers from a couple dinners graciously provided by other folks. He said he has ribs, fried chicken, meat loaf, pork chops and typical sides. No inside dining but a couple of pick nick tables were available. Nice guy named Glen I don't member the exact hours but I believe it is during the day M/S and Sunday afternoon.

Sounds like the great lamented Dinner is Done by Katrina. Two blocks from Taylorsville Rd on Watterson Trail.

I will there for sure. Not much of a cook and the dog refuses to cook. But I am a good eater. Try it out and tell them that Steve sent you. Who knows, I may get another free (good) lemonade.

I noticed the trailer on the way to the golf course Sunday, and stopped by to check it out on the way back home.
Steve is right. Glen is a very nice guy :D . We just wanted to see what was on the menu and to check his hours because we had already eaten. After a brief conversation, he let me know that he's only been there for a couple of weeks, he's been blessed with brisk business and seemed genuinely excited that we had stopped to check out his little operation. He even sent us home with a little sample of his bill of fare. 8)
He gave us a Baby Back Rib,(not the best I've ever had but it was OK), some really awesome Greens which I can see myself going back a lot for, and some Candied Yams.
The menu consists of reasonably priced soul food. Meatloaf on Wednesday only, Fried Chicken on Sunday, Mac & Cheese, Grilled or Fried Pork Chops, Greens of the Day, Ribs, Po Boys, etc. The kind of food that you would see served at many of the Mom & Pop joints I see when traveling around the West End.
It looks like pretty much all of your entree items are prepared to order so I plan on calling ahead when we are in the mood for that sort of thing. I'll post the menu and contact information later.
We may try some things later this week and give a better report, but from what I sampled everything should be pretty good! :D

I thought they were vinergery and sweet with a nice black pepper flavor.
The greens change daily. Turnip, Mustard, Collard and Kale. They are $2.50 a side

By the way, the name comes from his grandmother who he said taught him to cook.

I was out making deliveries and had to drive by and the trailer is no longer there. I'm sure he's somewhere close by though. I think having to move every two weeks is one of the stupiest requirements.

It would be rather nice if there was a website where the various trailers could go and update their current location...if only we knew of such a place... i'd even let them email or call me and i could update it for them...

How about Twitter or Facebook? I know that food trucks in bigger cities use Twitter.

I think Madeline has a point, Scott. Twitter and Facebook are great - I use 'em, too. But here we have an easy locally owned and operated ;) system and a built-in audience of people who want to know.

He pulled his trailer during the windstorm. He said he had a couple of caterings he had already committed to. I stopped Saturday and got catfish, beans, and potato salad. Catfish .. great... beans and potatoes .. very good.

He seems to be planning on staying there permanently but I really don't know.

J-town was having their Halloween trick or treat and hundreds of costumed rug rats running around.

My wife & I stopped by. The people who run the operation seemed VERY nice. They gave us a taste of the yams & ribs which were very good. Ribs were a bit tough-but were cold so that was understandable.

We both ordered the 2 piece fried chicken.

We were disappointed that when we opened our boxes we both had 5 chicken wings a piece. They tasted fine-but it wasn't what we were expecting. The greens were whatever, the mac n' cheese was bitter/burnt & inedible to the point that my wife spit it out upon first bite, The yams were great, the baked beans tasted from the canned variety with some sausage added. The corn bread muffins were alright.

We will try the place again to check it out & see how it evolves. Maybe it's a diamond in the rough & we're willing to give it a chance to shine.

I'll try it again tomorrow & a few days this week & will report. I'm really hoping for this place to be a gem given it's super close to my house & locally/family owned.

Thanks Dan, i really appreciate it. We really have to budget before we go anywhere, so i like to scope out prices and stuff.

I plan on calling, but just wondering.... do they have whole racks for sale or just sell them in plates?
