Spanish Chorizo

by Jason R » Wed Oct 20, 2010 11:24 am

Does anyone have a recommendation for where to buy Spanish Chorizo (the cured version)? The supermarkets seem to only carry the un-cooked version, if they carry it at all. A Southern Indiana location would be preferable but not required.

The recent Aldi thread mentions chorizo - do they carry Spanish style?

Doll's market on Lower Brownsboro used to have an excellent, pricey import.

I have gotten it at Liquor Barn and World Market. It is kind of tough to find here and I am not sure why? If you have some time you might want to get some from http://www.latienda.com the brand they carry is palacios and I think it is better than the kind I have gotten from Liquor Barn or World Market.

I've bought it at Liquor Barn before and recently ordered some from,

Bought some recently at Lotsa Pasta that was very good. It was in the open fridge section in the corner closest to the checkout counter if I remember right.

You may be able to get it at Mejier. I think I remember seeing it at our location on Hurstbourne. They have a pretty decent International foods aisle.

I knew I could count on you guys. I went to Lotsa Pasta after lunch - whoa, what a place. I've heard good things about it but had never been -- pretty amazing stuff. They had exactly what I needed, and at a great price. I couldn't resist picking up some of the Chipotle Chicken Pasta Salad while I was there, too.

Dan, I've asked multiple times at my meijer (New Albany), and I usually just get dumb looks. They only have the pre-packaged raw 1-pound tubes -- I've used it in a pinch, and it's been okay. But I am totally looking forward to having the real deal in my paella this weekend!

Thanks, Everybody!

Jason,

When you need it the next time around, and are looking to stay in southern Indiana, you should check out the La Rosita grocery store (not affiliated with the restaurant in New Albany) on Blackiston Mill Road in Clarksville. I've gotten fresh Chorizo from them several times and it has always been excellent. They are right behind the Speedway on the corner of Lewis and Clark and Blackiston Mill Road.

Excellent grocery, Todd, but a possible issue: The quest here is for Spanish chorizo, which is a very different animal than Mexican chorizo. Sort of like the diff between Cajun andouille and French andouillettes.

Are you sure La Rosita's chorizo isn't the Mexican kind?

You are correct, it is the Mexican variety.... I did not realize there was a difference, but it makes sense.

Aldi's does carry chorizo but it is the "raw" kind; not smoked. I wonder if Leo Lopez (one of the owners of Havana Blues in New Albany) can tell you where to find "Spanish-style chorizo". I'm pretty sure it was on one of the tapas plates I had there.

La Bodega at Felice used to carry the Palacious brand cooked chorizo in both hot and mild. You might want to check with them ( it's very good).

I had to dredge this old post up, but I bought some fresh Chorizo from Preferred Meats in Sellersburg on Wednesday and it was excellent. I personally don't know the difference between Spanish and Mexican chorizo, but I'm going to guess this was more on the Mexican side. It was lightly spicy with a bit of chili flavor to it, but the flavor and consistency of the meat was tremendous. This was on the milder side, but they are also going to make a spicier chorizo to have on hand as well, if they have success with this product. I whipped up a batch of Huevos con chorizo with it tonight, and it worked perfectly with the dish.

They have started creating their own sausages (for lack of a better term by me) over the last few months, and have done very well with Italian sausage (both in link and ground form), bratwurst, and now chorizo. This has to be as fresh of this style of meat you are going to find. With a bit of information from the foodies on the site, I'm sure they could whip up a Spanish-style chorizo.
