Derby Pie makers introduce golden pecan pie.

by Robin Garr » Tue Oct 19, 2010 12:30 pm

After more than 50 years of baking Derby Pie (and aggressively defending its registered, hyphenated trademark "Derby-Pie"). Louisville's Kern’s Kitchen has unveiled a second product, Golden Pecan pie.

It was not immediately clear whether they have sought to register the mark "Golden-Pecan."

According to a news release, the recipe for the Golden Pecan pie, like Derby Pie, came "from Great-Grandma Kern’s personal recipe box." It's made with pecans and "custard-like" vanilla filling in a pie crust.

Golden Pecan pie is the result of an effort led by Jon Rupp, great-grandson of Walter and Leaudra Kern and the most recent member of the family to join the operation.

Golden Pecan pie, a Kentucky Proud product, can be purchased locally at A Taste of Kentucky, in Liquor Barn stores in Louisville and Lexington or through mail order from A Taste of Kentucky and the HoneyBaked Ham catalog. Several local restaurants offer Golden Pecan pie, including Bistro 301, Burning Bush Grille, Derby Dinner Playhouse, the Blue Horse Bar & Terrace at the Crowne Plaza and the Holiday Inn Hurstbourne. Visit www.derbypie.com for more information.

Derby-Pie®? It's a chocolate-walnut pie that comes in a box with a load of mystique and a shovel full of hype. It originally started years ago in the old Melrose Inn in Prospect, and the Kern family, which owned the restaurant, has turned it into a thriving business with an international clientele. They make a pretty decent pie, but their aggressive efforts to sue the pants off any eatery that ever used any form of "Derby" in connection with "Pie" hasn't really sat well with people around here, especially since the pie, whatever its secret recipe might contain, is tasty but not really creative or innovative in any way that I can discern.

I've thought for years that it would have been poetic justice if the people at Churchill Downs had come after them in court for using the word "Derby."

What I have yet to figure out is how Derby Pie is any different than the stuff they make at Jack Daniel's, other than it's missing the whiskey?

Deletes the whiskey and adds the trademark. ;)
