Meals for elderly?

by Deb Hall » Fri Oct 15, 2010 10:23 am

All,

A friend of mine came to me with this question; I assured her the folks here could offer some good suggestions:

My inlaws are getting up in age and “what’s for dinner?” seems to be an issue for them each night. I was thinking a good gift for them for Christmas would be a service that would bring them meals or that would prepare meals that I could pick and we could freeze if needed. Do you know of anyone that does this? I recently saw an article on someone that does that provides a similar service for people trying to lose weight, but that is not a concern for them as they are in their 80’s and are not overweight. We just want them to eat! :D

The one personal chef I know no longer does this. Anybody have any services/businesses/chefs they would recommend?

Thanks for the help-
Deb

I can't offer direct testimony, but I'm pretty sure that Sandy Pike, who's cooked at some decent places around town, does this now. Let me see ... try this link:

Meals on wheels?

http://www.mealcall.org/meals-on-wheels ... sville.htm

These meals are also prepared with "age appropriate" ingredients. i.e. low sodium, low sugar.

Thanks, Robin- I'll pass it on.

Thanks for the suggestion, Heather but Meals on Wheels is for folks who don't have resources. My friend wants to buy a service as a present. Meals on Wheels is a great organization, though!

A very sweet church member gave us a $75 gift card to Piccadilly when my wife was sick. I would be happy to let go of that for a discounted rate, because seriously, what says meals for the elderly more than Piccadilly? I have a feeling though that there is not a particularly strong market for Piccadilly gift certificates. Oh well! Sorry I'm no help at all on this one Deb.

Kris,

And, I'm guessing it would be poor form for you to donate it to your next church auction???...!

Indeed it would Deb. I worked at a church that had the Wednesday night meals catered by Piccadilly each week! I'm not sure I could even walk into that place!

The article featured Mae Pike who is Sandy's daughter I believe.

Here's an out-of-the-box idea.

What if you bought them some gift certificates or something similar from "Takeout Taxi"
http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/ ... 2-412-7700

Then assemble a binder with menus from the restaurants that Takeout Taxi delivers from...along with gift certificates to their favorite restaurants.

That's a good idea, Leann! Thanks.

I also thought some of the "Dinner is Ready"- type, prepare your own foods places had freezable meals. Are any of those places still around?- I know several of them closed...
