Mexico Tipico in Middletown

by Adam Smith » Mon Oct 11, 2010 11:55 pm

...located next to the Rainbow Blossom on Shelbyville road, I grabbed a combination to go. Really good Mexican American fare I thought. Chile relleno, beef enchilada, beef taco, chips and salso, and a 20oz soda for $9.52. Good stuff so stop by if you're in the area.

I assume this is connected with Mexico Tipico in Shively? It was one of the first "real" Mexican restaurants around town, opened in the '80s if memory serves.

What's your take on Zapata's Corner, Megan? I've found it enough of an improvement on the Los Aztecas/Nopalito genre to make me wish I lived closer to Middletown. Of course, you've got Mi Patria in Lyndon for the *real* thing ...

Like Robin said, Mi Patria is my favorite.

I found Chuy's to be more hype then anything else.

I'm still waiting to visit Mi Patria with the Mayor of Mi Patria.

Robin, I haven't been to Zapata's Corner yet! I seriously need to get out more often. I would suppose it's casual enough I could take my 3 yr old to.

Zapata's Corner is fantastic! I always find that places like El Nopal are much more on the American side of the authentic Mexican/Tex Mex equation. Zapata's almost seems to be straddling the line. I had a bistek con poblano once, and another steak and potato dish with a brandy sauce (forgot the specific name) that are on the authentic side, while many of the tex mex favorites are present as well. Not only were both dishes fantastic the decor and atmosphere was great. Like you said Robin, improvement over some of the other tex mex offerings on the east side of town.

I haven't been to Mexico Tipico, so I cannot comment personally about their offerings.

I found Zapata's to be a bit pricier than most other Mexican places in town. Better than most, but I would say comparable to Puerto Vallarta, just more expensive.

BTW, I thought it would be worth mentioning that Mexico Tipico's chile relleno was among the best I've had, most places tend to under or overcook them which seems to make the pepper a bit tough but theirs was easy to cut into with a fork..
