I do have one observation. I have noticed there are so many TV's in Louisville restaurants. What is up with that??

The others thread was more about being offended by a specific channel I think the question here is about television in general.

On that subject I definitely agree the only place they should be is in bar areas except in sports bars. I find that very distracting in the dining areas of restaurants like Rafferty's, Applebee's, etc. There's certainly enough places to go with televisions if you want to see one but for goodness sakes don't force people to watch one while eating!

While I love the overall ambience, service and food at the combined Equus/Jack's, I have to say that it does strike me funny to have big flat-screens all over the walls in the part that used to be Equus. It just doesn't fit with my memories of its elegance. To their credit, though, the times I've been there they kept all the TVs in one room on the same channel, avoiding the kaleidoscope effect, and they had the sound turned down.

I believe it boils down to the type of restaurant. The Oak Room should not have LCD's on their wall. On the same token, while eating at a bar, I'd expect to find televisions. Consequently, I've never seen a television at a single Waffle House.

Actually I also find this frustrating. If I have to have a TV shoved in my face at times I would like to know what they're talking about. They could at least leave the closed captioning turned on that wouldn't disturb anyone who would allow someone to know what they were talking about.

I certainly agree that the atmosphere of Equus made a dramatic change with the addition of televisions.

The restaurant does not want to be held responsible for completely distracting you from your dining company. It just wants to offer you a partial distraction from said company.

I go in some places that have TVs and think, "I bet the owners think they are responding to customer demand, but I'm not sure that's the case." I think being anti-TV, or at least reasonable with TV placement and count, is one way for independents to distinguish themselves from chains. If the customer has to have their TV, they can head off to the chain establishment. Fine with me.

That being said, I'm totally cool with TVs in bar areas, except having TVs often leads to behavior inappropriate for a particular establishment.

I'd say televisions in bar areas, chain or independent, are a contributing factor. But would not point them out as a source of inappropriate behavior. Alcohol does a great job with/without Closed Captions.
