Not toooo spicy...........

by TrishaW » Sat Oct 09, 2010 4:35 pm

Taking a friend out in a bit to dinner in Louisville. Spice draws me like a moth to a flame. She just requested something "not too spicy". Recommendations???

Think Ethnic! Go to a good Chinese place like Peking City Bistro or Jasmine or Oriental House, and you order from the menu items that have a star or chili pepper to signify heat while she orders from the items that don't? :)

You could try doing the same thing at Thai or Indian, but I've found they're sometimes more careless about spicing up non-spicy dishes. You'd probably be safe doing this at Vietnam Kitchen, though. :)

Or go to one of the Mexican places that's designed to be comfortable to Anglos - Zapata's Corner, Los Aztecas, El Nopal/Nopalito, Sol Aztecas, etc., and explain to the server that your friend doesn't want anything spicy but you do.

One question is does "spicy" equate to "hot" in either your mind or in your friend's?

I find the food at Basa extremely "spicy", filled to the brim with unusual flavors that perfectly balance each other; similarly, Asiatique has interesting and wonderful blends of flavors. At the same time, few if any dishes at either place could be defined as "hot". I can think of many Indian dishes that are (heat wise) quite mild, yet there's no question about them being "spicy."

Maybe that's another way for both of you to enjoy the same dishes?

Simply Thai

No spice/heat or melt your face off hot, your choice.

Digression alert! Are they EVER going to move? I would have thought the old Bazo's would have been an easy turnaround.

I hope not. I love the divish atmosphere of the current location.

I looked in the window of the new place last weekend, and I'd say they haven't gotten much further along than they were four months ago. The front door was open and it looked kinda like somebody was working in there. Maybe it's a DIY project?

By the by, I ordered a tofu pad thai with a heat level of 4 (out of 5) and a red curry with chicken with a heat level of 2. The curry was definitely zippier than the pad thai. That wasn't a bad thing for us, but if you don't like spicy, order verrrry carefully.

I hate the current location/facility...I'm tired of driving by with people standing in the parking lot waiting to get in. I just don't even try anymore. We will make further attempts if and when they move.

I'm with you. The place gives me clastrophobia. We always get carryout. Problem with the Bazo's location is that the kitchen was not designed for the type of cooking/food they do and it took a lot more time and money than expected. It will be great, though, when it happens.
