Hit a Home Run for Nutrition on TV

by Dan Thomas » Thu Oct 07, 2010 9:24 am

I am looking for anyone interested in volunteering to help out with a couple of ACF Chef & Child Foundation events we have scheduled next week on Monday the 11th at Wellington Elementary and on Wednesday the 13th at Rangeland Elementary.

The event is called "Hit a Home Run for Nutrition" and we will be serving breakfast to the students at the schools on those days, and it will only require about an hour or so of your time starting at 7:30am.

What I am really looking for is any one willing to come out in their chef whites to help serve and engage the students in conversation about nutrition as they go through the lines.

This is a great opportunity to get involved with Michelle Obama's initiative to get"Chefs Move to Schools"
http://www.letsmove.gov/chefs-step-1.php

Any one interested can reply here, send me an email to the address below or send me a PM. I'll give you more information about this exciting opportunity.

Here's a link to the program.
http://www.acfchefs.org/download/docume ... ctions.pdf
Unfortunately, what originally was going to be a tasting for a couple of classes has now been turned into breakfast for the whole school each day and I'm already committed to this and can't back out now. That's why I'm looking for some help.

I will actually be making the eggs, and the fruit kebabs are now going to be fresh cut fruit (there was a lot of concern over the skewers in the hands of students) but now with the numbers of students involved and the way that the buses arrive at the schools, we wont be able to have a demonstration station. Anyone who volunteers will be assisting in preparing and serving.

The original idea and focus of the program has kind of been lost in the shuffle because both of these schools have a large percentage of students on free/reduced lunch. We will be using product that is already been procured by JCPS, so this "menu" has basically been substituted for the menu for breakfast that would have normally been provided.
The schools wouldn't have received the Federal reimbursement money for those on free/reduced if we didn't set it up the way that we did. I know it doesn't make much sense to anyone outside of the school district why this is important, but it's an alarming fact that over 65% of all students attending JCPS schools are on a free/reduced lunch program. Every cent of that money per student, even though it's not a lot, really is why food can even be provided in schools.

Looks like you're not getting much action on this request, Dan.

I'm in, both days.

Is there stuff written that we're to tell the kids other than fruit is good for them?

It's so nice to finally see the world paying attention to the quality of school lunches. I would just like to say that the victims of school lunches everywhere would like to thank you for your service. I still have nightmares to this day about the mounds of french fries & pizza that I was forced to eat.

This was a lot of fun! And I got to meet some cool chefs!

The kids were really excited. "Are you ALL really chefs?" "This is the best breakfast we've had!" "Are you going to be here for lunch?" "Are you going to be here every day?"

There were a couple of unhappy campers with the no chocolate or strawberry milk, but hey, it's a Health and Wellness Magnet School. :)

Looking forward to Wednesday.

Once again, from the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank all of the chefs who volunteered to make "Hit a Home Run for Nutrition" a big success. Your contribution really counts when it comes to the impression that was made on the students. I think everyone involved would agree that it was fun for all!
