Shellfish allergy

by BillB » Wed Sep 29, 2010 11:37 pm

My wife has a severe allergy to shellfish and has nearly given up asking if seperate fryers are used for shellfish since the answer invariably comes back, "we fry everything in the same oil." Are there any places around town that use seperate fryers for their shellfish? I'd be grateful for any suggestions, but my wife would be so happy she might very well write you into her will. Thanks for your help!

I hope you get an answer, our son is allergic to all fish and has gotten a reaction from foods that do not appear to be connected to fish, but were cooked in the a kitchen where fish is also cooked. we have a nephew that is so allergic to shellfish, he cannot even have a whiff of it. so we cannot go into any place that has a lot of fish cooking with him. Back when i was in food service, it was common practice to fry the fish in a separate fryer ("don't want the fries to taste like fish"), but now it seems to have fallen aside.

I wish there was a good response to this, for Bill's and Suzi's sake, but I'm afraid the reason Bill's question has gone without a reply - not usual around here - is that it wouldn't be usual procedure for an eatery to maintain separate fry stations for shellfish and fin fish.

Have you tried restaurants that don't specialize in fried fish, Bill? I'm thinking a general-service restaurant might be willing to pan-fry a special order of fish in fresh oil, while a place like Moby Dick or the Fishery might have more difficulty setting up a separate frier.

About all I can advise is to keep asking ... and hope someone here comes up with an inventive solution.

Bill,
We have 2 separate fryers, and one has only on rare occasion had seafood/shellfish in it. The only seafood that goes in the fryer is our calamari, and on said rare occasion, coconut shrimp. That being said we always use the same fryer for the calamari and the rest of the fried items go into the other fryer. Suzi, this hopefully helps you out. You should have no problem at our restaurant, but we always recommend that you inform your server of any allergies. That way the information gets relayed to either our executive or sous chef, who will assure the preparation of your meal. We'd love to have you all in sometime, and please ask for me if you come by.

Are you looking for fried fish, or just to safely order something fried?

Nora, we're looking for something safely fried. My wife, Melissa, can't even order fries for fear they were fried in the same oil as shellfish.

Ned, we will definitely try your place soon! Thanks for the information.

Robin, I know it's rare a question isn't answered here, so I was patient. We've tried all sorts of locally owned restuarants with no luck so far. Melissa simply stays away from anything on the menu that is fried, but there are times when she'd like fish or some fries so we'll ask about pan frying. It looks like Napa River Grill may become a new favorite.

Suzi, I hope this helps with your son. I'm also hoping there might be a few more responses coming for us.

Caffe Classico
2144 Frankfort Avenue
Louisville, KY

I'd try Cafe Classico. They have great fries (and other food) and I don't see any fried shellfish on the menu. Really not much deep fried anything on the menu.

No fried shellfish list on Rumba's menu either.
