What's your favorite local doughnut shop?

by Brian Curl » Mon Sep 27, 2010 7:26 pm

I live in Fern Creek, so Sugar and Spice is close by and good. I'm sure there are others scattered around town with similar tradition, following and quality. What's are the favorites around town?

Btw, I think this would be a good food article Robin. I've never seen a good comprehensive article on the local doughnut scene...

Plehn's has to be right up there too. Although any discussion that invokes Plehn's, Nord's and Bussman's demonstrates how much this town's historic German heritage remains an element in the civic waistline. :)

Wohlebs Bakery 35th and Broadway circa 1965...would need a time machine...I was 6 the donuts were soooo big and were soooo good.
Alas...my local Donut Express will do fine since no time machine available at the present.

I'll second Donut Kastle(APPLE FRITTER) and third up Nord's(BACON DONUT) but the Donut Palace inside The China Express in the Newburg area on Poplar Level is definitely a hidden gem.

The toasted coconut donut at Sugar and Spice is remarkable, but I prefer Phlen's overall. I still need to try the other ones, but I'm thinking I'll make a run to Nord's later.

I'll have to third Nord's French Twist. My fave. They are addictive!

I also have a big soft spot in my heart for Krispy Kream as well. Though not quite local, they do bake them fresh here everyday! Now that there's a location a stone's throw from my home in J-town, I'm starting to re-gain all of the weight I lost working at Forecastle back in July.

Definitely Nords - holland cream, maple bacon, and the pretzel (which is similair to the French fry, but the whole thing is like the crispy twisted middle part of the French Fry).

We live much closer to Sugar and Spice and it does in a pinch - there are a few
of their donuts I get a craving for at times. But usually when I need donuts I'm
thinking of the above mentioned varieties at Nord's.
