OK...My Rooties review.
Rooties is owned by "Marty". He's had restaurants in Buffalo and Fort Lauderdale before relocating to The Ville. His primary staff is "Jim" the bartender and "Shannon" the server. Both have been with Marty since his days in Buffalo...many years ago. All of them very friendly and efficient.
I'm not too sure of the history of the location...I believe it once housed a sports bar called "Hoops" (??) Regardless of the name it was obviously some kind of sports bar in it's previous life and the decor and (to some extent) the amenities more or less reflect that. The place has something of a "early 90's" kind of feel to it...in other words a bit dated but not (in my mind) uncomfortable or "dive-like". The restrooms are clean...not spotless...nothing you wouldn't expect in a bar environment. Entertainment wise...They've got 3 or 4 pretty nice pool tables and a few games. It's never a problem getting a pool table if that's what you are into. Some of the TV's were very likely inherited along with the location and when we -first- started going there many of them were of the old style non-HDTV variety. In the past year most (but not yet all) of these sets have been replaced by new LCD models which are conveniently located throughout the bar. I'm guessing there are probably 30 sets in the bar, the large majority of them LCDs, including 5 or 6 booths with their own little 19 inch monitors. There are also two giant movie sized screens (rear projector models ??) on either side of the bar, a bit grainy but what they loose in resolution they make up for in size.
The crowd is mixed but leans more toward the blue collar on non-game days and the age thing is all over the map. I've rarely seen the place really packed...except on Football Sundays and it's a zoo when the Bills are playing. That being said I've never went in there but what I couldn't find a TV they would tune into the game I wanted to watch. Another thing, I've never been in there and found the crowd the least bit obnoxious. Spirited on occasion, obnoxious no.
The beer list is "none"...You get American domestics on tap and bottles of the same. The closest thing to "craft" beer I've spied in the coolers is Heineken. So if you've got issues with that, don't bother going. Personally I enjoy an ice cold Bud in a (God forbid) frosted mug while I'm woofing down an order of wings...but that's just me...and a boatload of other people talking.
Ignoring the wings for a moment the food is good "Pub Grub". Nothing more nothing less. That being said everything I've ever tried is a full notch above the commissary like crap they serve up at BW3 or Hooters. They've got a reasonably good burger, good chili dogs, the nachos are top notch, Salads are so-so, etc.
The wings....<sigh>....deserve their own paragraph. THOSE things are culinary crack. Marty is from Buffalo originally and -knows- what wings are supposed to be...He even appeared on the old Regis and Kathy Lee morning program doing a wing demonstration. His (their) claim to fame now is a grilled and BBQ sauced wing that is very-very popular (the sauce is Marty's recipe and they sell it by the bottle). I've had 'em, I like 'em but it is the TRUE buffalo wing that I go there for. I wouldn't know Duck Confit' if it came up and bit me in the ass...but I DO know chicken wings and Hooters and BW3 are not even on the same planet as these things. Crispy yet tender morsels of tongue biting goodness is what they are. I'm sure there are other good wings in town...but I'll probably never try 'em. Don't need to.
Bottom line it's all personal preference...I've always found the two previously mentioned places to be very Frat-house-like and the food to be total crap...but if someone is actually into all those foo-foo flavors and corporate reheated food...so be it. On the other hand if ya don't mind bellying up to the bar with a 300 pound black guy (who just got off work from the Ford plant) on one side of ya and a skinny guy wearing a Buffalo Bills jersey on the other side of ya and just want to go to gnawing on some really good wings, then maybe ya ought to give Rooties a try.
