Papalino's sweeps Slice of the Highlands competition

by Robin Garr » Fri Sep 24, 2010 9:27 am

They took No. 1 in both the Critic's Choice and People's Choice categories. Here are the final totals:

Critics Choice:

Papalino’s
Mulligan’s
Boombozz

People’s Choice

Papalino’s
Mulligan’s
Bearno’s

My thoughts: I had Papalino's, Mulligan's and Flanagan's on top with Boombozz trailing Flanagan's by one point. I was surprised to see the good showing of two places not usually thought of as pizzerias, but in fairness, both were worthy, and the crowd's and critics' opinions on Mulligan's support that.

Also, I realized after sampling that there's a problem with doing a pizza throwdown in a setting like this: Pizza is best when it comes sizzling from oven to peel to plate. Pizzas had to be delivered to the competition setting, the auditorium in the Episcopal Church of the Advent on Baxter, so what we got was the equivalent of delivered pizza. No matter how you slice it <heh>, pizza suffers from even a short trip in the insulated box, and none of the crusts were up to what they should have been. Fortunately, this handicap hit everyone equally, but it's worth mentioning.

Participating pizzerias were Papalino's, Mulligan's, Flanagan's, Boombozz, Bearno's, Spinelli's and Za's. Where was Wick's? I'm told that the organizers had room for seven, and accepted entries on a first-come, first-served basis.

The event, which also included a silent auction, was jammed. Beneficiaries were Gilda's Club and the Original Highlands Neighborhood Association.

Innnn-tel-esting....velly innnn-tel-esting...Never even heard of Mulligan's. Good on them if they pulled off a double second place finish.

Mulligan's is the former Kaelin's ("If you can't stop, please wave") at the corner of Baxter (or is it Newburg Road at that point?) and Speed, just a couple of blocks west of Bardstown Road. Nice place, sort of a neighborhood diner-bistro.

What kind/style of pizza does Mulligans serve?

What were the toppings for the competition, just cheese?

Hmmmm... I pretty much agree about Paplino's - though there are often times I crave BoomBozz's thin-crust. What really surprises me is Mulligan's. I got a pizza there right after they opened and it was terrible - soggy and uninspired. I decided never to go back. Was that a fluke or have they gone through a chef or technique change?

I believe after they opened, they changed the type of pizza oven they use.

Ken, I can't testify about its fluke status, but would gently make the point that going to a place "right after it opens" is not necessarily the best way to make a lifelong decision about giving them one's patronage.

I'd call the one last night pretty typical "Louisville-style."

What were the toppings for the competition, just cheese?

Every entrant made their own decision. Papalino's kept it simple and pure, with a cheese slice garnished with basil chiffonade. Boombozz put forward their portabello veggie pie. Spinelli's went with a "white" pie, ricotta and garlic oil. I didn't take a lot of notes, but ... mmm ... Za's had pepperoni on a whole-wheat crust. I got a nice round slice of banana pepper centered on mine, but I think that may have been "special for the judge." ;) I didn't take notes, so sorry, I can't recall all the specifics.

Where is that in relation to the old Sears building ? Now that you've all got me trained you can't just go and remove any reference to my one and only landmark.

Mulligan's IS the old Kaelin's. Different part of town.

Mulligan's is in the shadow of where one of Erhler's dairy stores used to be.

Disregarding the fact I've never heard of Mulligan's the thing I find interesting is the third place finish of Bearno's in the people's choice category. I've had all the others and certainly do not consider Bearno's to be in the same category. I also find it disheartening that they limited the entries to seven since more entries would it not cost them anything. I certainly would have liked to see how Wick's would have done it against the competition.

I'm reliably informed that Wick's management was afforded the opportunity to participate and chose not to do so.

Robin... as for my comment about Mulligan's - I guess I was too vague. When I said I went there 'right after they opened' I meant two months or so after - as long as you give some new places before you review them. I like the oven reason. It was the crust that was the main problem. I'm glad to hear they're making good food. That building holds dear memories for me that go all the way back to the 50s.

Fair enough, Ken! I took you too literally. In any case, as I said, NONE of the crusts last night were outstanding, but I attributed this to a situation in which all combatants had to bring their pizzas in, delivery-style.
