Downtown Lunch Recommendations

by Madeline M » Fri Sep 24, 2010 8:07 am

Need some suggestions on somewhere to go for lunch today. Will be close to 4th street, but don't want to mess with 4th Street Live. Can make it as far as Baxter or across the bridge in alloted lunch time. Have been to Bunz, Papalino's and Joe Davola's this week so will scratch those off the list. Would like something different, but kinda drawing a blank. No Indian or Chinese.

Just over the bridge is the Come Back Inn. Nice lunch spot. 415 Spring Street, Jeffersonville, 812-285-1777. For some reason the link to it on Hotbytes does not work. This does though,

The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I have eaten lunch at the new BBC at 3rd and Main 3 times in the last two weeks. Both the food and the service are very good.

Theater Square Marketplace is very close to 4th street live. I had lunch there a few weeks ago and I was really surprised at how nice it was. I am also surprised at the lack of buzz about it as well. It is a beautiful space and the food was great.

Caviar! (Muhammad Ali)
Bistro 301 (Market)
Dish on Market
J. Grahams (Brown Hotel)
Brownings 8)
NABC Bank Street, New Albany (it's only a bridge, "get over it" :P )
Toast on Market
Devinos (Go Cards!) hey it's good and cheap too
PTs (Just seeing if you were still readin'- hey, it's in walking/dancing distance!)

Google these places, most in the 02 zip code, all good!

Safair on 4th is a great, and very reasonable, Mediterannian alternative.....fun folks there, too!

My favorites in downtown proper, in no particular order, are Proof, Dish on Market, Z's Fusion, and Theatre Square Marketplace.

If you're willing to go to East Market/Butchertown, definitely go for Mayan Cafe or Blind Pig.

We've been many times for lunch, and it's excellent. Definitely among the top 3 in the 02 zipcode.

Saffron's, The Bodega at Felice, Red's Corner, and Indi's.

Thanks for all the suggestions! We are going to give Browning's a try...it's been on the list of places to try for awhile and I didn't realize it was so close. I'll have to make a run to some of the other places in coming weeks though...glad there are so many good options down there!

I will start by saying that I haven't had lunch downtown in several years. I used to work down there so I do have a great deal of experience with lunch time dining however. Aside from many of the other great recommendations already listed I have a few. If you feel like Italian you may want to check out Pesto's. I used to work at 4th and Ali and would walk down there regularly for lunch (5th and I believe Chestnut). The place has a great atmosphere that reminds me of an authentic, small family owned place. I actually haven't been in about 5 years and was just thinking the other day that I want to go back soon.

I would also recommend the Road to Morocco in the Henry Clay assuming they are still open. I last visited for a late night snack after a play in 2008 and it was fantastic. I am not sure if Vincenzo's has been mentioned either. The great thing about Vincenzo's for lunch is that you get the same great food for about 1/3 of the dinner time price.

OOPS: I am a day late, but save the post for anyone else looking for a downtown lunch recommendation.
