Dinner and a movie - do other eateries do this?

by Robin Garr » Fri Jul 27, 2007 3:31 pm

Caroline K was mentioning to me about CINE night at Bearno's in the Highlands, which sounds like kind of a cool idea. They show a movie on the back deck after dark, with music before it, and offer BBC Beer and Republic Liquors red wine specials throughout.

The next show is Sunday, featuring the movie Goodfellas, starting on top of the hour at 10 p.m. after Lotus Blake as the opening act from 6-9.

This PR announcement out of the way, I'm curious: Is anybody else around town doing movies? I remember the old Plainview Cinema and Drafthouse (later Sichuan Garden) was set up specifically to serve dinner in a moving-picture environment. But the idea of just putting up a screen and having a movie on the deck seems cool and fairly original. Maybe a new trend?

The Monkey Wrench used to do it on certain nights but I am not sure if they do it anymore. Wicks on Baxter used to do it on Monday nights with a beer and popcorn special... they usually showed 3 movies starting at 10pm. Several years ago we had a group of people that always went to Chucks or Lentinis on Sundays and watch the Sopranos and that was always a great time.

Seidenfaden's does it randomly, but I wouldn't recommend the food.

I was concidering doing something like this on a Monday night but was wondering what kind of licensing issues would arise. I know that ASCAP pestered the hell out of me till I switched to cable. Maybe Ron can chime in??

Not really sure-it is a local film group who normally show independent films at different venues all over town...this was the last one for the Summer.

It would be cool for some local eateries/pubs to collaborate with local film buffs to create a movable food and film series. They could even concentrate on films with food and drink themes: Like Water for Chocolate, Eat Drink Man Woman, etc.

It's not exactly a foodie haven, but I've enjoyed several evenings watching films at Bear's Place in Bloomington as part of the Ryder Film Series.

I attended "Goodfellas" at Bearnos with my husband and some friends and we had a blast! A pitcher of Pabst, (sorry beer snobs) pizza and katydids providing background music.

Doesn't the Nachbar in Germantown do this also?

Louisville Film Society are the culprits, great people. LFS had a tent at Forecastle this year. Same people that do the Nachbar shows.
