J. Gumbo's Poplar Level open again!

by RichardM » Thu Sep 16, 2010 8:47 pm

Was just out on Poplar Level and saw that J Gumbo's there was closed up tighter than an igloo in February. Was a sign on the door - picture attached - indicating it was 'temporarily' closed.

Ask another purveyor there and they said it was closed up and the franchisee was looking for someone to buy it. And, there is another J. Gumbo's opening on 42?

And I am proposing a SNAP OFFLINE This Sunday Morning at the J Gumbo's on Frankfort Ave. Anyone up for that send me a PM with a best/good time frame to meet.

Richard

Is the J. Gumbos in the Anchorage Business Park off of Nelson Miller Parkway closed as well? I've not seen any activity there in a while. I thought I've just caught it at odd hours, but now I'm seeing a trend.

We have closed both the Poplar Level and Eastpoint (Old Henry Rd) locations at this time in the hopes of finding new owners for those locations. We are also taking this opportunity to do some updating for those stores. I apologize for any inconvenience this is causing and we are hopeful to have those stores up and running again very soon.

We opened our newest location in Prospect (just past the Kroger, behind the PNC where Subway used to be) this past Tuesday and have been very warmly received by everyone out that way. This store replaces the beleaguered Crestwood location that never could find enough local support to prosper. It also features our test-marketing of an enhanced menu. Stop out and say hello! We will be doing an official grand opening in the coming weeks, once I am satisfied that the staff is adequately prepared for such an endeavor.

We have also updated our Central Station and Fourth Street Live locations and both are under new ownership.

Ah, the bizarre growing pains of being a small, owner/operator franchise! I greatly appreciate all of the support, and especially the understanding, from our loyal customers as we grow.

Thank you all! And again, apologies for any inconveniences as a result of our working out some kinks.

I used to live in Chalmette, La., a little town south of New Orleans. They have two J.Gumbo's locations there and the reports I get from relatives is that they are very popular.
I work down the street from the former Old Henry location and never thought the local traffic would support that location. There's the potential for a good lunch business but after 5 p.m. the area is pretty quiet.
Any thoughts of a Fern Creek location? The former Crabby Jake's location seems to be available.

Thanks to BP's blunder and the closing of the bridge on Judge Perez for like 6 months, we were forced to close the Chalmette location on Paris Rd and merge it with the Arabi location on Judge Perez. Both were doing well until that one-two punch hit. The Arabi store continues to plug along, trying to establish a foothold and feed the good people of the 9th Ward. It has not been an easy fight.

The Eastpoint location is lunch only (or at least was and is expected to continue as such) for the very reasons you mention.

I hope this means you'll do some advertising with us on HotBytes. Listening to the ground actually isn't as informative as the colloquialism implies.

Carla, we are working on that very thing as well. Is the ad information I have from you still accurate, or has it been updated? Either way feel free to send me a copy.

Thanks! :D

We appreciate good food. I went to the PL store and visit Central Station as well and generally was/am pleased with both.

What's this 'enhanced menu' thingie??

We are toying around with several new options. For instance at the Prospect store you can get any entree over rice (as normal) or over tortilla chips and build your own Cajun nachos, or in a warm tortilla wrap (again build your own). We have expanded our serving line to include a cold bar with toppings like cheddar cheese, jalapenos, green onions, freshly diced tomatoes and bell pepper, etc.

We have had a lot of success and demand for our regular menu Cajun Nacho offerings and the wraps have been a success in the stores that have offered them, so we are testing to see if they are desired enough to justify a menu expansion.

Thank you for the kind words!

Michael your post seems antagonistic. What's the problem? We're talking about a restaurant, not a cultural school or encyclopedic entry. Restaurants evolve according to its patrons needs/wants. Ronnie just said they are meeting the demands of their patrons with their menu options. For a once single store (several years ago) that has grown into several (I apologize because I've lost count of how many) J. Gumbos must be doing something right. While their menu might not be 100% authentic cajun cuisine (and really, I would have to question just what exactly that would be) I hardly think they are presenting themselves in a fraudulent manner. I give them points for thinking outside the box. Your accusation is harsh and unwarranted.

I picked up some of the nachos last week from the Frankfort Ave location and they were very good. I can't remember which one I got. They were really spicy, and delicious though!

I can't remember what dish they were out of that I wanted to try, but the nachos were a great second choice!
