The Colonel, on What's My Line? probably from the late '50s.

He apparently wasn't yet the icon that he would become, because the panel didn't need to be blindfolded. Always the pitchman, though.

It's hard to imagine a time when people didn't know who he was.

That was awesome!!

Question? Who got the $50? Harland? Charity? I can remember watching the show but now about the money.

900 outlets! Indeed. There are that many in Kentucky now probably.

I can remember having KFC in the early 70's in London, ENGLAND when I was over there. hmmm... Tastes like chicken.

I appreciate the post.

At one point, the two most recognizable people in the world were the Colonel and Ali. Both 'from' our sleepy little river town. I remember stories of the Colonel living across from the 'old' location of the KFC at Hikes Point. The condos at the intersection of Breckenridge and Hikes Lane. He would go into the store and throw out their gravy. (The manager became a engineer and still works in R&D.)
I remember seeing Ali on 4th Street near one of the record stores - long time ago when he was still Clay.

Dude visted my grade school, must have been about 1971 or 72. He was already pretty old by then but very sharp.

And by the way, Harlan was a Hoosier. :D

I was in Egypt several years ago, and when asked where I was from, told them "Kentucky"...the almost universal response was, "Kentucky Fried Chicken!" I suppose it didn't hurt that (at the time) there was a KFC in Cairo, on the road leading to Giza (and the Pyramids)...

You are correct....born in Henryville, IN, if I'm not mistaken.
