Red Pepper Restaurant

My co worker is craving some Dry Chili Chicken from the now defunk Red Pepper. Anyone heard anything about them reopening?

No. :( The hostess told us during their last week that they wanted to open again, but I'm afraid it was possibly mostly wishful thinking.

However, the new Peking City Bistro in Middletown is a fairly close substitute, and Jasmine, farther out US 60 just past the Snyder, has decent authentic Chinese fare, too. Also Oriental House in St. Matthews ... ask for the authentic menu.

You are making me cry! And it was just three minutes from our house! Maybe four minutes if there was traffic on Frankfort Avenue. :(

That's a far drive, Gayle. When I lived n Oldham Cty, I got used to driving to get anywhere. Now that I'm a city girl, anything over 10 minutes requires planning, thought, and a real good reason to get in the car.
I've looked up some recipes online, so I guess I'm going to try to make them myself.

BTW, Tea Station in Norton Commons will make almost any "authentic" dish you can describe. They do have an "authentic" menu, although it's only in Chinese and not translated, but we've had no trouble ordering off of it (with the manager translating) or describing a different dish and having them prepare it.

Really! I had the impression it was very "Chinese-American." Or is that the regular menu? I see a trip to Norton Potemkin Commons coming up!

I liked the "three cup chicken" off the Chinese menu, although it was an initial struggle to order it as they felt Westerners would not like a dish containing chicken on the bone (hacked up and stewed). My wife wanted a special steamed fish, with no added salt or soy, but still flavorful and they did a steamed ginger fish with a number of (unknown) spices served beautifully.

Some of the young waitstaff can't handle special requests and don't know the "authentic" menu, but the owners (who are always around) can help you.

Now, admittedly we have not ordered everything on the Chinese menu (three out of maybe 20 offerings ), or described a wide variety of dishes for them to do, but what we have tried has been very good!

Last time I was in Tea Station there was a group of about 9 women and a few children and they were all getting items that weren't on the menu. Some of them were apparently regulars as they were requesting Vegetarian Hot and Sour soup and a few other made to order items. I've seen some neat looking soups and noodle bowls on other visits as well. Pretty sure if you can describe it, they will try to make it. The owners are very nice and almost always in the dining room.

Kinda off topic, but is there a proper name for the Singapore Street Noodle dish from PF Changs? I've had it at other places in MI, also called Singapore Street Noodles, but since PF Changs has changed their recipe and it's now all curry, I'd love to see if some other place could make it right. Was one of my all time favorite dishes before they screwed it up.

Madeline, your post piqued my interest. I just Googled "Singapore Street Noodles recipe" and got at least ten responses including two that touted that they were PFChang copycats. Looks good. I've got to try at least one of these!

You may hve more luck if you look for either "Mai Fun" or "Singapore Mai Fun" noodles. I think it's likely the same (or at least similar) dish, and most Chinese restaurants here carry it. It IS a curry dish, tho at the Chinese restaurants here the curry is very light, and one of many flavors.

Will keep an eye out for that! Curry is one of those things you don't want to overuse or use alone and PF Changs has started making it the only flavor in the dish...yuck! The curry was noticeable before, but there were so many flavors that played together in the dish it just popped all your tastebuds...now it's just curry and a hard, gritty taste. I've had it at three seperate PF Changs in the past 6 months and all were just curry...so abused it would stain your mouth and nearly inedible, so think the corporate recipe got changed.
