We went to Zapata's Corner for dinner Saturday night. They are located on Shelbyville Road in the same center as the new Havana Rumba). We had heard good things ( here), but we were surprised at how really good it was for dinner. Small place, brightly furnished, excellent service. Not a taqueria- more like El Nopal/Los Aztecas in concept- but the food is far more flavorful and some really interesting regional dishes.
First, chips and salsa: Salsa was nicely spicy and they also serve chips with a small sour cream based dip. Brian and I ordered two things to split: one of their burritos and an Aztec meat dish that's served in a heated Lava bowl,( sorry didn't write down the name) The latter was recommended by our waiter and was an excellent choice. You choose two meats ( we did steak and carnitas) and they come to the table in this boiling dish with the meats cooking in a "lazy sauce". Served with a few tortillas ( we ordered extra for $1.80), the flavor was amazing. Don't know what's in that lazy sauce but I'm hooked- it's slightly spicy and full of complex flavors. Burrito was very good, but superfluous, next time we'll probably order an app and the main dish to share. We washed everything down with two massive drafts ( Dos XX Amber- must be 32-36 ozs) from a nicely chilled mug. We were shocked when the bill came that the massive beers were only $5.50 each(!). The rest of the prices were very reasonable too.
We loved this place so much, I went back for lunch two days later. A colleague and I had the Three sauce Burrito and the Green enchiladas. Both were excellent. ( Unfortunately no beer this time so that was a quality control test
