Havana Rumba Last Evening

by Bill Veneman » Thu Aug 26, 2010 10:13 am

OK, this week has been one of those that it has had a succession of Monday's, so Alan and I decided a dinner out was in order. And Havana Rumba fit the bill. So off to St. Matthews we went.

We decided to have the Tapas towers (both of them) and split the two between us, with the necessary livations. An incredable selection of flavors and smells. Very satisifying and filling meal. Service, as always, was excellent.

A bit more that we like to spend on a weeknight dinner ($62 with tip), but hey, it was a pissy day and we both needed a treat.

Always one of my favs in town.
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!

I am as big a fan of Havana Rumba as there is - have been going fairly often ever since they opened - but have one big gripe concerning their mojitos.

For the first year or so, every mojito was hand made to order. At some point after they expanded next door and became crowded every night, they switched to a mix that apparently is made earlier in the day. I completely understand - hand muddling hundreds of mojitos every night is time consuming and would probably require hiring an additional bartender - but the quality of their premixed mojito is nowhere near that of a freshly made one, especially if tasted side by side.

Now, every time I want a mojito, I find myself going through a whole ordeal to get one made fresh. I'm to the point that if I can't get one freshly made I don't want one at all - although this has never happened. Is it rude of me to ask for this, or should I just shut up and not have one at all?

Oh my! It's been over a year since I've been there I bet. Ours were not from a mix (most decidedly so) so if they have since resorted to a mix I detract my compliment of them. The mohitos we had were made fresh and were sublime. What a shame. I guess I must resort to making my own.

IMO the mojitos at Mojitos are better than Seviche or Havana Rumba. At Seviche it's the Cadillac marjarita by a wide margin. Even though Mojito's and Havan Rumba use the same recipe, Mojito's are better.

Sorry guys, but last Friday evening I had a Pomegranate Cucumber Mojito on the Veranda at the Empress Hotel in Victoria B.C. Amazing! I don't think I'll ever look or taste a mojito in the same light again.

Jason, as far as I know the only part of the Mojito that is "pre-mixed" is the turbinado simple syrup, even the mint is still plucked as needed..we go there all the time, but I will ask about this on our next visit.
