Your Choice for Best Chocolate Dessert in Town?

by Carole C » Mon Aug 23, 2010 4:04 pm

We have three couples headed to a lake house for a kid-free getaway this weekend. Plan to fix up a special dinner Saturday night and include the most decadent chocolate dessert I can find. I would like to hear suggestions of your favorite chocolate dessert available for purchase in a quantity suitable for 6 (but if I have to buy a large cake and have leftovers, well, I guess I can figure out what to do with them.)

Red Rock Terrace Bread Pudding
Fresh baked butter croissants baked in sweet custard surrounding chocolate ganache,
banana crème anglaise and chocolate sauce 6.95

I copied that from Napa River Grill's website. They served me that on my birthday. We all shared it, and it was just pure sin. Sooooo yummy. Pretty sure they could fix a batch for you. I still think about that 2 months later, lol!

We had it last night and it was damn tasty, but I don't know if I could call it a chocolate dessert. One of them is big enough for two and it would probably reheat nicely.

(The huge chocolate cake at Costco is delicious if you don't feel like going out)

I don't know about the best, but I had a seriously yummy chocolate cupcake at Cake Flour last week. I think it was some kind of truffle cupcake. I can't remember exactly because I was tempted by several varieties of chocolate cupcakes.

Based on Linda's description of the Red Rock bread pudding at Napa River, I think a dessert with incidental chocolate is well worth considering.

hands down the flourless chocolate torte from Sweet Surrender. On special occasions and during passover, it is the most requested by the entire family. It is fabulous.

Anything from Coco's Chocolate Cafe. Can't get much more chocolatey than that. I have had their mousse and it was very good. My friend loves the fondue pot there. I know they also have a drinking chocolate.

I'll third the Costco chocolate cake. All their desserts, actually. Nummy.

Although I've never had the Cotscto offering and although I may very well pick it in a blind taste test, I'm going with Sweet Surrender. Anything from there is tasty and it's local.

I am humored by those of you recommending Costco when the owner of Sweet Surrender is a forum member. Her cake is good. Real good. It's local.

Granted, the OP just asked for suggestions of a favorite. If this Cotsco offering is just that good, maybe I'll have to give it a shot. On the other hand, if I am plenty fine with Sweet Surrender - and how can a person not be?! - why would I desert them. [Pun intended.]

Obviously, opinions vary regarding buying local, experiences with SS, etc. I'll get off the soapbox now. and I should probably duck.

Nah, don't duck, Matthew. I did a groom's cake a couple of weeks ago - four layers of chocolate cake, soaked in bourbon with pecans mixed into the buttercreme filling, with a chocolate drizzle on the top and outside edge. Whole cake was like a giant bourbon ball. I'm all for buying local.

Leah, I only learned this when my mom and I were looking at the cakes at the state fair. Found out you created my sister's wedding cake back in July 2005. It was big hit. Would love to say I remember all the details, but that day's a five-year-old blur. Got rave reviews, though.

oookay, here we go...... I don't eat a lot of desserts, and have not really have had any "celebrations" other than PMS to warrant chocolate cake. I live LOCALLY around the corner from Costco, the timing was right, and I picked one up. I have had the desserts from Sweet Surrender (love Jessica) and I would purchase a cake from Leah Stewart in a heartbeat. I would happily pitch the idea to Karem's to carry A cake made by either Sweet Surrender, or Leah Stewart. It will be $7.00 a slice probably after you tack on the fuel charge that it would take to get a cake made by either of these women to Karem's . Not to mention the wear and tear on their delivery vehicles for ONE cake. I believe that is all Karem's will be able to sell per week.

There are times that you are not able to support our fabulous and talented culinary entrepreneurs, and I for one get buyers remorse when I cannot, but alas, that's life. You have to keep them in mind for the right time, and hope that others are doing the same.

Jessica, and Leah much love and respect.... Heather
