Dhalpuri Roti

by JustinHammond » Mon Aug 16, 2010 8:31 pm

Is any place/one making good Dhalpuri roti in Louisville?

Dhalpuri Roti
A roti with a stuffing of ground yellow split peas, cumin (geera), garlic, and pepper. The split peas are boiled until they are al dente and then ground in a mill.

I could definitely eat that! Sorry I can't answer, Justin, but I'd nominate Dakshin and Bombay Palace as most likely to have it or be willing/able to make it. Perhaps give both a call and see how they respond?

The little place next to Pestos used to. Are they still there? The owner was also an electrician.

That was Manoosh, a great guy. He's back to being an electrician, though. Manoosh's closed years ago. Then Majid put in a Persian buffet, which didn't last, and has been followed by soul food, Ethiopian, etc. etc. We've been discouraging Chef Louis from trying this one in another thread.

Dhalpuri Roti is a common Caribbean dish. Thats one cuisine we are definitely lacking here in the ville.EDIT TO ADD ( I forgot cocos lokos). I was lucky enough to have had a gig in Staten Island recently that was near a couple of really good Caribbean joints where I had some great rotis.. There was little else in the neighborhood(water front docks) for lunch other than these places, so I had it often. They always had some Dhalpouri, as well as whats known as Bust up or Buss up Shot, kind of a deconstructed Roti that you dip in curry. Other highlights included the fish cakes, baked saltfish, saheena(a ball of deep fried greens served with chutney),oxtail stew, really good jerk of course, conch seviche, conch fritters as well as many other great offerings. I would wash down lunch with either a peanut punch or a "shandy",the best I can tell its some kind of cross between citrus soda and a light beer. The other great thing about these joints was very reasonably priced daily specials. The pic that follows shows a typical 5 dollar Caribbean lunch, mango chicken, mac n cheese( Ive spent time in Caribbean and this is very common),cold pickled cabbage, mac salad hidden under green salad, fried plantains and peppered rice and peas (beans). Im getting a jones for it just thinking about it.

The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.
