I think it's great when top restaurants do vegetarian dinners, just to prove that there's more to vegetarian cuisine than just a bowl of peas and corn.

I do wonder why they didn't send us a notice, though. Always hurts my feelings when people notify the Gannett newspaper but forget the bigger foodie site. ;)

Somehow, the notion of non-vegetarian wine is creeping me out.

It's not as bad as you think: Usually this simply means that no egg whites were used in "fining" (clarification by putting some protein material in the barrels to attract hazy particles in colloidal suspension). In older days wine makers occasionally used dried oxblood or isinglass (powdered sturgeon bladder) for this practice, but that's pretty much died out. In any case, the fining materials fall to the bottom of the barrel or tank and are left behind when the wine is bottled.

Modern wine is most often clarified by microfiltration or the use of non-animal-source materials like bentonite (a form of clay), so it's really nothing for anyone - even the more humorless breed of vegans, who generally just plain don't like food - to get their knicks in a wad about.

Not every vegan is humorless.

Heather Mills is laughing all the way to the bank I hear.

Of course, there was no implication that they are. In fact the implication was very much to the contrary.

Actually, I didn't mean to imply such. There's a certain type of vegan who just exudes "holier-than-thou," though. But for most vegetarians, it's a lifestyle and philosophical choice that I respect.

Rainbow Blossom Chicken

by Deb Hall » Fri Jul 20, 2007 4:11 pm

Okay, Given the conversation, I have to share this story:

Last year I was interested in trying local, fresh chicken so I went to my local Rainbow Blossom (Springhurst) to buy some. They were out, and kindly offered to call the St. Matthews store to see if they had some for me.

The employee at my location put me on speakerphone and asked: "We have a customer here who wants some fresh chicken- do you have any?" To which the St. Matthews employee said: "Do we have any dead animal carcasses? I' Don't know...hey Will, can you check and see if we have any dead animal carcasses left". I burst out laughing, and the deeply chagrined employee at my location then informed the employee at St. Matthews that the customer was on the phone...

When I drove over to the St. Matthews store to pick-up my reserved chicken, the employee there apologized profusely, truly appalled at what she had said in front of me. She explained she was a vegan, and it was an inside joke, but under no circumstances would she force her views on someone else.

Still makes me laugh! Just don't try telling me Vegans have no sense of humor!!!

I thought the phrase "the more humorless breed of vegans" was pretty clear that you were talking about only a certain subset, and not all.

No....honestly....I was just making a joke, after reading that Heather Mills rejected Paul's 40 million and is seeking 100 million. I guess with that kind of money she can adopt a lot of animals, eh?

Seriously, it was a joke.

Veg Dinner

by Heather Y » Fri Jul 20, 2007 9:00 pm

If I am not mistaken, Rudolph Steiner was the founder of the Waldorf school movement! There is a Waldorf on New Lagrange Road. I sent my youngest son there..... it lasted a week.

Between the Summer solstice, maypole, and immersion Japanese at six years old.... he decided he would not go back. He folded his arms and said "me no go"! Funny!

Biodynamic wine...... very interesting.
