PR pieces

by Deb Hall » Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:13 pm

Robin,

Do we still use the standard that announcements/ads from representatives of restaurants/etc have in the subject: "PR"? Or did I miss something? For example: PR: Salsa night at Felice Vineyards.

You are wonderful in giving us a forum to post everything local. I love getting these notifications, but would like to know in advance that's it's a PR piece before reading it.

Maybe I'm just getting grumpy in my old age... You guys (and I know you will) am I being too anal?

That's a good point, Deb. I did that for a while and there was never any comment either way, so I got a little lazy and sometimes forget to do it. It's a good idea, though, and I'll try to remember when I post news releases in the future.

Oops, I just realized that I didn't post this one.

I do try to be accommodating to local restaurant and food-and-drink folks who want to post announcements of events here, but it IS best to ask me first, to avoid accusations of "spamming" the forum with unsolicited advertising.

Rules is Rules I guess.

If she works there yes, but if she is just looking to meet a load of forumites
I say go for it.

It would be worth 5 bucks to watch people trying to do that dance.
There is an instructor. It would be worth 45 to 60 minutes anyway. :P

Robin,

My apologies: My comments were not really directed at you, but at the poster as this was a blatant ad. As you know I have nothing against marketing your place or posting events (done it many times myself  ). But I'm suggesting that we all use a convention of something that tells that in the original subject, with the courtesy of telling our fellow forumites that it is exactly what it is. Otherwise, I'm concerned that the Forum will be overrun with marketing/ads and move away from it's original intent as an on-line discussion board for those who love food.

(Thanks for not telling me that I'm being too anal... )

I try to use a light hand in moderating the forum, Deb, in the hope that it will be self-policing. But be assured that I won't sit still and let an advertising takeover happen. :)

Bottom line, an announcement of a specific event that forumites can attend doesn't bother me nearly as much as a generalized promotion. Does Danny Mac's cheesesteak come to mind? ;)

But I prefer it when folks who want to make a commercial post ask me about it first, and under certain circumstances I might consider a public scolding or even remove the post. The Felice announcement didn't bother me that much, but maybe I was in a mellow mood that day ...

(Thanks for not telling me that I'm being too anal... )

Lisa is a patron of Melillos/Felice/Bodega

by jpdurbin » Wed Jul 25, 2007 10:16 am

She is not a PR person but thought informing Foodies of Salsa Night would be a good thing. She does not work for them but enjoys Felice and was passing on info of the event.

Even better! :)

It occurs to me that it might be a good habit for folks to get into of disclosing or disclaiming such announcements. Let the record reflect that we WANT to share information about legitimate restaurant, food and drink happenings. That's a big part of what the forum is about. But it's also helpful to know whether an announcement is coming from management or from a consumer who's telling us about it purely on a non-commercial basis.

None of this rises to the level of A Big Deal at this point, and note that I was fine with Lisa's post in the first place. The broader subject of commercial posts and their handling is worth discussing in public, but I don't think anybody is dissing Lisa here.

I thought I tried to say that several posts back but hey. Maybe we could start up "Wild Invite Night" with everyone competing for the wildest invitation on earth, but in or around the Louisville Area!

Anyway they are suitable candor for LRF.

I went to Salsa Night at Felice

by jpdurbin » Sun Jul 29, 2007 10:44 am

I went to Salsa Night at Felice. Initially there were just a few of my foodie friends there. I went to Melillos to get a bite to eat came back and it was standing room only! I’m glad I brought my own chair else I’d had no place to sit;) The Salsa instructor had 15-20 couples shaking their groove things and having a ball. The Salsa band started up after her instruction and they danced into the night. Thankfully the rain stopped and the party spilled onto the piazza. Jeff and Anna intend on doing this event monthly.

I did get some video via my camera but it is loud and dark. They are posted here: http://jpdurbin.net/Pictures/FeliceSalsa/default.asp

JP.... didn't you shake your groove thing...?

sounds like a blast. I don't think I would even be able to sit still, let alone sit.
