Source of Local Meats

by Jenny H » Sat Aug 07, 2010 1:30 pm

Can someone give me a good listing of sources of local meats that are as natural as possible and where to buy them? Hope that is the correct way to put that.

I know a good source of beef is Foxhollow Farms. I think you can go to their farm or buy it at some of the farmer's markets around. Anyone have a good listing for me (beef, chicken, pork, eggs, etc.)

Jenny-
I'm not sure where you are located and suspect you will get loads of input about L'ville. If you venture across the river to New Albany on a Saturday morning to the farmers market you can get some 3-D Valley Farms beef. It is free of growth hormones and antibiotics. Animals never see a feedlot and are raised humanely. Best of all the beef is terrific. In fact, we have a sirloin in the queue for tonight's dinner.
Disclaimer: The owners are neighbors of mine and depending upon the pasture being utilized, I can see the animals grazing from my deck.

Jenny, hit the St. Matthews Farmers Market at Shelbyville Road and Browns Lane, or the Bardstown Road Farmers Market on Bardstown just north of Speed, every Saturday morning from 8 a.m.-noon. Dreamcatcher Farm is one of our favorites, but lots of other good ones are there, too. Fiedler at Bardstown, Stonecross at both places, Garey Farm at St. Matthews, just to name a few. Try Preferred Meats in Sellersburg, Ind., a retail store that sells the produce of Southern Indiana farms. You can also get some frozen local meats at Rainbow Blossom in St. Matthews, and Stan's Fish Sandwich in St. Matthews sells some Dreamcatcher meats (mostly frozen). Also look for Misty Meadow and Barr Farm at the Phoenix Hill Farmers' Market at the Felice Plaza on East Market Street on Thursday afternoons from about 2:30-6 p.m.

These are all pastured, humanely treated, natural, hormone-free meats. They're all we eat these days.

Also, eggs ... Chelsea's and Shelby Pride are always available retail at Paul's produce markets around town, and the farmers' markets also offer a wide choice. (Be careful about meat at Paul's, though. It's not what you're looking for.)

Still more thoughts: Whole Foods has natural, humane and hormone-free meats, but only a few, if any, are locally produced. Fresh Market has quality meat, but not what you want, it's all feedlot finished. I'm sorry to say that some smaller butchers around town that get props here - Kingsley, Karem's, Prospect Meats - don't have grass-fed, natural local beef as far as I know.

Whole Foods usually has local area lamb that is excellant ...not sure about beef. I don't like buying frozen meat which can limit local sources. I tend to shop and cook the same day....where can you get local non-frozen meat?

Edit addendum: Doll's has grass fed beef that is good but I don't think it's a local source.

A friend told me about some excellent ground beef she picked up ($3.50 a pound) from the Jeffersonville Farmers Market. We went there this morning to check it out. I was surprised to realize the owner of M & M Cattle Company is my cousin, Mike Myers. His business card says, "Freezer Beef. Hamburger. Your contact for local farm raised and butchered beef." His phone (presumably a cell) is 502-724-6158.

I'm assuming he can process any cuts you'd be interested in.

Mike is raising cattle on a farm that been in the family for almost 200 years up in Utica, Indiana. (His great-grandmother and my grandmother were sisters.)

Give him a call or stop and see him at the Farmers Market in downtown Jeffersonville:

Dreamcatcher sometimes brings fresh meat to the farmers' markets, Mark, and I think I've had fresh on occasion from Stone Cross. I've never seen local lamb at Whole Foods, but good for them if they carry it. If you ever catch another offering, please let me know who it's from?

They carried Green River Cattle Co. beef for several years, and it was excellent, but last time I was in, I was told that coop has disbanded. All they had was Black Angus, from feedlots. The guy did tell me they were looking for another local or regional source because a lot of people want it. I hope they found some.

Another spot on the sunny side would be Preferred Meats on Highway 60 in Sellersburg. They are 5 minutes off of exit 7 on I-65. All their beef is hormone, steroid, anti-biotic, and all that other stuff free. They have several farms in the Paoli region that they source from. Excellent steaks, and very reasonably priced. http://www.preferredmeatsinc.com/ for more information

I actually mentioned that above, but it was buried, and definitely worth repeating. :)

Does Preferred Meats sell fully grass fed beef? I can't see where it says that on its website.

Also, where is a good source for local, natural chicken?

Adam Barr with Barr Farms is an excellent source for beef and chicken. He runs a CSA, that I belong to, and I have no complaints. Super nice guy and a great product.
