32 degrees, A Yogurt Bar to Open at Summit

by Jenny H » Fri Aug 06, 2010 12:18 pm

I just saw where there is going to be a frozen yogurt place opening up at the Summit near Starbucks. They have a pretty neat idea... big wall of different yogurts and then a topping bar. They then weigh your creation and charge by the ounce (.45 per oz).

Pictures and more info on their Facebook site...

Wow..I'm kind of surprised we're getting one of those. There's a new one in Tucson where my parents live and it's crazy busy! But they're warm enough all year to have one..so who knows. I would definitely try it!

Not sure if it is a 32 degrees, but there is a similar concept on the drag across from UT's campus in Austin.

As for the weighing aspect, it was a double-edge sword for me when I visited. On one had, I was able to decide my "serving" size. On the other hand, there's really no way - and no guide - to figure out how much you are buying until your yogurt hits the scale. Guess knowledge would come with practice. Or sitting in the shop and taking notes as other people purchase. Creepy...

My other memory of the place - and, again, I'm not sure it was a 32 degrees - is that the staff didn't seem to do much. They offered direction and limitless samples and, obviously, ran the cash register, but they didn't seem to do much otherwise - especially considering there were maybe 5 or 6 in the small shop. Granted, I'm not sure what else there was to do, but seemed odd having all these workers not doing anything.

The product was so-so. Can't say I would return. I'm more of a sorbet and gelato kind of guy.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

The new one back home is called Orange Leaf. Probably along the same lines of what you mentioned.

Tried one of these places in San Diego. It is very easy to overload and then cringe at the price lol

You almost feel like they are fleecing you. I guess they key is to weigh as you go, but that seems like work, and not yogurt eating*. Hell, I'd be happy with a visual that gave me some idea of general costs for certain serving sizes.

* I know we weigh stuff, say, in the produce section. I see two big differences here. First, you can always put the product back in the produce section. Second, grocery shopping is work. Yogurt eating shouldn't be.

I'm pretty sure I can single handedly keep this place in business.

I've been to similar setups in both Dallas and Nashville of late and both were crowded. You can go overboard with toppings, but it's not hard to show some restraint... you likely won't end up with a pound of yogurt + toppings accidentally, and that is still under $8.

I'm not sure of their location choice, but I do know when they open I will be there :-)
