Thai Smile 5

by Mark Lowe » Thu Aug 05, 2010 5:00 pm

Man, a friend of mine took me out to Thai Smile 5 off of Preston Hwy the other day. I was a little skeptical when I saw it was in th eold Taco Tico building. Went in ordered the Chicken Pad Thai 5 star. Man. It was awsome. That along with a cold Thai tea and I thought I was actually in Thailad, LOL. Jokes aside. The food was good. The place was packed and the guy behind the counter was super friendly. This is actually the first Thai place in Louisville that I will consider on a regular basis.

Mark, did you go for lunch or dinner? I've had lunch there in the past that didn't knock my socks off, but I've heard that they kick it up a notch at night. If you got that impression at lunch, I definitely need to go back out there.

I went for lunch on a Tuesday. Maybe it was what I ordered, but I liked it. I admit the free cup of ground chicken soup was a pass, but the 5 star Chicken pad Thai with fried Todu was right up there with some stuff I had in NY. My friend got some sort of orange chicken with rice. I didn't taste it, but it looked good. Never been there for diner, maybe I will take my wife back and see. Hope it is good for you too.

Better than Simply Thai?

Where is that? I have never been there. It is better than the two different Thai places that have been in Soneybrook next to Kroger and is is better the not so authentic Pad Thai I got once at Asain moon.

I like my Pad Thai with lots of flavor not just spice and it only neads a hint of lime.

If you like Thai, run to this place. It is fantastic. FYI, it is super small, maybe 10 tables.

I wonder how Simply Thai's move into the larger space where Bazo's/Benny B's/Thatsa Wrapp/Bruegger's Bagels/Sid's Bagel used to be is going. If they don't run into scaling-up problems, that could be awesome.

Didn't see to be much development in the new space when I drove by a few days ago. Granted, I didn't get out and plaster my face against the glass for a closer look. Just a drive-by glance.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

They are moving slow. I was told they were shooting for a July opening, but that didn't happen. The move somewhat saddens me, as I love the dive aspect of the place. Reminds me of a fantastic Thai place on Oahu that is in a garage.

Thai Smile on Preston is very good and some of the local food critics agree. Anytime I've been the food and service have been very, very good.

A friend of mine, and frequent Thai Smile guest, told me the owner is selling the place and moving to New Jersey. No one else has heard anything about this?

We love Thai Smile 5 and are always treated like family even if it has been a month or two since our last visit, the owner always seems to know who is not with us and asks about them.
We have always had good food. I personally love the pineapple curry chicken. My one son loves the heat and gets stuff extra hot 10 stars. Hubby loves anything tofu.

I went back today for lunch with my wife. It was just as good the second time as the first. Now with that said, I started talking to the stafff and ended up talking to Patrick, the owner. He has been the owner for the past 5 years. He confirmed that he sold the place to some family members. He is a local Louisvillian and plans on staying in Louisville, but wants to take some time off to spend it with his kids while they are young. He mentioned he was toying around with the idea opening another Thai place in about two years either in St. Mathews or near the Summit.

The new owners offically take ownership on Monday and I am told there will be a revised and expanded menu with free app specials during the opening week.
