The Blind Pig

by Bonnie E. » Wed Aug 04, 2010 9:23 am

Some friends and I ate there for the first time last night. We were celebrating a birthday and the birthday girl wanted to give it a try. None of us are food critics or in the biz, but I did want to comment on what a great experience it was. A couple of the gals are not very adventurous eaters, so I was concerned when they looked at the menu. We were there 7:30 on a Tuesday night and they were hopping. Joe/Joel was our server (sorry I couldn't hear his name as it is a very loud space!) was terrific. He was so busy but never left us lacking. At one point a fly decided to take a swim in my almost finished glass of wine. No big deal, I asked for a clean glass as we had a couple of bottles. Instead Joe/Joel brought me another complimentary glass of what I was drinking. No need to do that, but very sweet of him.

Menu seemed a bit "heavy" for this hot weather, but everything was great. We started with the White Bean Puree, really good. Two had the Pan Roasted Cod and Chorizo, one had the Bison Patty Melt and I had the Chicken Bouillabaise. All were very tasty. The word we kept using was "flavorful". I'm lacking the right words here, but all the things we had seemed simple yet special if that makes any sense? The thing that stood out for us was how hard Joe/Joel and everyone was working. It is a fairly small place and it was packed, but the staff hustled and I can't imagine anyone had any complaints. It is a very open kitchen and one of my friends joked that she hated smokey places but if she the smoke smelled of bacon she was totally fine with that.

OH and we finished with a shared dessert-wait for it-Butter Pecan Bacon Brittle Ice Cream. Bacon and Ice Cream, sooo good.

Rockstar!

Good review. I'm intrigued with the chicken Boullibasse. Chicken tends to get dried out during the boiling/poaching process- I'd like to see their technique...

Thighs hold up pretty well, in my experience. I don't know what's being used in the boullibasse though.

The cassoulet with garlic sausage and duck confit will leave you begging for more.

It was chicken breast. I don't know how they did but it was very moist and tender.

yeah, the Bouillabaisse caught my attention as well. My guess was also for thigh meat. But breast you say? I'll have to go over and try it!

Great review! Thanks!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking...

If it was breast, then they have to drop it in at just the right moment. It takes a certain dedication of staff to pull such a thing off, I think.

I haven't surfed these boards in a while (my 'dining out budget' became my 'diaper budget' when my first child was born), but I popped back over today and now I can't wait to try the Blind Pig! For about two years I lived in the 900 block of East Washington Street, and boy how I wish this place had been around then!

Thank you, sir! Looks like a lot of great new restaurants have popped up in the last 2.5 years! We get out about once a month and tend to hit our regular spots (Havana Rumba, Bourbons, Irish Rover, etc.), but in 10 minutes of browsing I've found 10 new(ish) places that we have to try, Blind Pig being at the top!

Been twice. Once in the cold and then again last weekend. Find the food a little heavy for the extreme heat we are having. Something about the food and the interior of the building that just work well in cooler weather. Will go back in the fall.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
