Anyone know what the deal is with Maxwells Bar and Grille in

by Mark Lowe » Tue Aug 03, 2010 11:39 am

What is up with this place? I read the review in the couriour Journal and checked out their website. It looked great so last week I drove over for as the webs site says NEW Sunday Brunch. Got there and it was closed. I went back for dinner on Friday and was seriously disapointed. The photos on their site looked like 4-5 star dining. The actual food came out plain and ordinary. It wasn't kicked up or special. I talked to the server about the place and he told me that the place opend with a real Executive Chef, but the owner couldn't afford him so after the menu was written and the staff trained. he was let go. That is suposably when they dropped the Sunday Brunch.

Marty really raved about it in the CJ, but I got a chuckle when he wrote that the place looked "dapper." I've never heard that word used to describe a dining room before.

I may be mistaken, but I could swear it looks 99% the same as it did when it was Maggie's. I think I even recognise the bartender.

Oh well, you can alway goto Wild Eggs for a good Brunch.

Sorry nobody else has chimed in yet, Mark. I think Maxwell's is a little out of the way for folks who don't live around J'town, but we've got a few of those. Let's see, maybe someone will still pipe up.

We would go infrequently when it was Maggie's. The restaurant had the same name as our wheaten terrier and we wanted the shirt. Stopped by the now Maxwell's about a month ago. The bartender was the same. The menu was about the same. As I had previously done I ordered the quesadilla. It charred my tongue.
The chef came out and explained to me that he had previously been the chef at Turkey Joe's and that he had deglazed the pan with hot sauce. Never went back.

I wonder if that is the new chef or old chef? I actually liked Turkey Joes. They had a really good Turkey dinner and their brunch had this really cool take on a hot brown served over an egg muffin.

I'm reading a lot of strange things about Maxwell's in this forum. Three friends and I eat out very often and tried it shortly after it opened, only to find it highly average. I read the review in the Courier Journal a few weeks back and decided to try it again. For what it is worth, here is what we experienced, The same three friends and I had dinner there this past Friday evening. We all agreed that this was a whole new Maxwell's versus what we experienced in mid April. There is a new, relaxed atmosphere about the place and the food was incredible. My friend and I had the parmesan cod dinner and the others tried the Henry Baines Burger and the special of the evening, a relatively low key fish and chips dinner, which was "out of this world fish" according to my friend. The Henry Baines burger received an equal praise in the fact that it was cooked exactly to order, medium rare, which is hard to find in any restaurant that doesn't serve anything less than the very freshest beef. Our server, Ed, was on top of his game with timely, friendly, and informative service. We did question the fact that Sunday Brunch had apparently been discontinued and were told-quite candidly-that the original menu was put together hastily, did not live up to the standards Maxwell's was striving for and is being revamped to offer a more contemporary approach to a sound and relaxing Sunday Brunch. I can only say kudos to the staff. The food and service was amazing. Good luck and keep up the good work.
