Mexican recommendation?

by Catherine A » Mon Aug 02, 2010 1:35 pm

It seems there are numerous and new Mexican restaurants in Louisville, so I need the Forum's help in picking a really good one! Ideally, it would be located in the East End.

Thank you!

Important threshold question: Do you want an authentic taqueria where they don't speak much English, and if you want something good, you point at the menu? Or do you want a place that's maybe not quite as authentic but where you can speak English or Spanish and be understood?

Also, does it absolutely have to be Mexican, or will South of the Border do? (Reason I ask, I really like La Colombiana, which is in Lyndon, but is actually Colombian, not Mexican. And in the same shopping center, Mi Patria is an excellent Mexican taqueria, and very accommodating even if there's a slight language barrier. (If the family's polite young son is present, then it's not a barrier at all.)

My Patria gets my vote. Although the website doesn't mention it, they have pool tables and beer.

I tried El Tarasco on New La Grange Road recently, and I really liked it. Similar menu to most of the typical Mexican restaurants in town, but the flavors were much more appealing. I'm not sure what's in their chicken, but it's quite addictive.

Would it be asking too much for authentic Mexican and English speaking? It's for a fairly big group (20-25) so the ability to communicate is important. South of the Border would be o.k.

El Tarasco, in St. Matthews on Fairfax or in Lyndon (mentioned above) is a nice place where excellent Mexican food is available *and* English is spoken well. Another great option for you: Zapata's Corner in Middletown (in the former Mazzoni's location).

Or El Toro in the Liquor Barn shopping center on Hurstbourne at I-64, although that shopping center also has Shalimar (Indian) and Cocos Lokos (Cuban), and the latter especially is pretty hard to pass by. ;)

My Patria will barley hold 25 people and there has always been someone there that speaks good English.

Normally the cook is your waiter and there can be a small anguage problem. There is always someone roaming around, usually the cashier, that speaks English. The people are always super friendly and the food fantastic. You might call before you go.

Yeah, I'd definitely prepare them. Even though a group of 20 would technically fit in, I wonder if the nice folks who run My Patria would really be ready to handle that. Also, Catherine mentioned that "South of the Border would be okay." I'm thinking her group might really be happiest taking smaller steps in the direction of the real taqueria experience.

I'm recommending El Tarasco, El Toro or Zapata's Corner.

Good thinking - I don't want to overwhelm the staff or my group. All these suggestions are so helpful. Thank you!

I consider the language barrier a plus.

I'd second El Tarasco in St.Matthews. Food is pretty good and they have a back bar room for larger groups.

Can anyone recommend a great Mexican restaurant where they make their tortillas themselves? I love Los Aztecas and El Tarasco, but my boyfriend's dad - not so much. I'm on a quest to find him the best Mexican restaurant that meets his strict requirements. Strong margaritas, too!
