Exit Frankfort Ave gas station; Enter Pizzaria

by James Natsis » Fri Jul 30, 2010 1:44 pm

The C-J reported that the abandoned gas station on Frankfort Ave will soon become the Bella Pizzaria. I just drove by there last night and wondered when that eyesore would finally see new life. Shine Properties will develop the site.

Whoa! Within walking distance of my house! But wait, we've already got Fat Jimmy's just a couple of blocks down, not to mention DiFabio's, Porcini and Volare in the immediate neighborhood. I love pizza, but this may not be a spark of genius on somebody's part.

You may be right, Robin. However, if it is more along the lines of a carryout then it would not go head-to-head with the aforementioned restaurants. ......By the way, I hope I got the right place. The address is 1761 Frankfort. The piece also states that they will have two floors: lower level pizzeria and upper level studio for graphic designer.

I believe 1761 is the former fire house in Clifton at the corner of Frankfort Avenue and Pope Street.

I'm with Robin. I can't figure out why someone would open a new pizza restaurant in an area that already has a number of pizza places. I live near Pizza Roma on Bardstown Road. And when they opened, I wondered how they were going to compete with all the other established places. It looks like they've recently closed shop. I hate to see them go under since I'm sure they put considerable money into the start up. However, I think they might have had a better chance with a restaurant concept that has less competition. The location is good (and available). I'd really like to have a great NY style deli......or real Greek.....or a frites place with a big selection of dipping sauces and a croque masseur (sp?).

Point taken. Or go out the other way and it doesn't take long to get to Boombozz.

If someone would serve a real wood oven Sicilian style pizza, I promise to go once a week. Even Smashing Tomato in Lexington does a pretty good job with theirs and they have TWO locations.

WAHHHH

We ate at Papalino's yesterday. It was very good- love the mushrooms, yum! However, it still isn't that Sicilian that I crave. Oh well, going to Chicgo for 4 days, I'll get my fix.

Ate at Clifton's last night. I have NEVER been disappointed in their pie, not once. A little live music helps takes it to another level :D Even better when you run into some old friends.......

My issue with Cliftons is consistency. Even on the same pie. I appreciate the fact that they cook on a deck oven, which in hindsight, I wish I had done at my shop. BUT... I've been to Cliftons probably 4 or 5 times and each time 1/2 my pizza has been very good and the other half as been slightly burned, or under cooked. I think the pizzas need to be turned a few more times in the oven, or they need to upgrade their equipment.
