Spinelli's coming to St. Matthews!

by Robin Garr » Sun Jul 25, 2010 5:26 pm

I don't think I've read anything about this, but when we were driving through "downtown" St. Matthews today, I noticed the old storefront at the corner of Shelbyville Road and St. Matthews Avenue (former Pizza Magia/Snappy Tomato) has "Spinelli's coming soon!" painted all over the windows.

Thinking about it and considering the success of the original Spinelli's in the Baxter club zone, this actually makes sense, as the growing cluster of bars and eateries clustered around the old St. Matthews downtown is starting to develop a critical mass of its own.

Nice! That's about the only thing that would fit perfect there! Not to mention their pizza is pretty good most of the time!

It used to be a good area for home delivery sales.

We've always felt the same way until I had Domino's at work a few months ago right after their big overhaul. My favorite pizza is Tony Boombozz or Bearno's. Doug's favorite is Papalino's and probably Za's. We decided to order Domino's the other night just to try something different. Not only was it super cheap for two medium pizza's and dessert, but it arrived in less than 20 minutes on a Saturday night. Some would say that it's because they're not busy, but I think it's because they are really efficient. The pizza was pretty good. It's certainly not my favorite, but I would definitely order again. I don't know, just my two cents...

I tried their new pizza, while it was an improvement I'll only eat it if someone else is paying for it. They are pretty close to the bottom of the list for pizza options period, I dont care what the cost or efficiency might be.

I agree. We order 99% of the time from the locals, but a few months ago were doing some pre-move work on our new house and wanted pizza very quickly. There is a Domino's very close, so we ordered from there. The re-vamped pizza is an improvement, and while I still prefer our local options, Dominos is at the top of my mega-chain corporate pizza list.

We always do local pizza, although not often in tropical weather. 3-4 weeks ago, we were in Westport Village on a Friday night, so we stopped in for pizza at Boombozz's. Actually we stopped because I had a craving for Boombozz's Margherita pizza which is my hands down, favorite pizza. ( I've even discussed, with the owner of Papalinos, the possibility of adding a Margherita to their menu. ) I love tomatoes and certainly tomato sauce but there's something about the balance of a well crafted Margherita with a garlicky thin crust, chopped tomatoes, fresh basil and fresh mozzarella that really works for me. It's simplicity at it's finest.

So I didn't read the menu, I just ordered. When it came to the table I saw the Pomodora sauce on the bottom of what in my memory was before basically a white pizza and I knew something was really different. Very long story short, the only person on staff that night in the Westport store who knew the Margherita recipe had changed was someone in the kitchen actually making pizzas. He very kindly offered to make one old style for me. He even went so far as to say he preferred the original Boombozz Margherita. But wishing to be a good sport, I ate the newer version :D while mourning, I'll confess, the loss of the older recipe. Afterwards, our server thanked me for pursuing the change in recipes , saying she was glad to be in the loop.

I never met the dude in the kitchen. I don't even have his name. So I'm not sure if I will ever have a chance to eat the original version again though I'm grateful for his offering of it. Somewhere in the house, is a description on an old carryout menu. I guess I could hang on to it. Changing recipes is tricky. Changing the recipe for something popular is even trickier. I hope the new Margherita recipe works for Boombozz. But if it were me, I think I might do a little staff instruction on the changes particularly if I were in the business of repeat business.

Catherine:

We have a Margherita pizza on the new summer menu. It's my understanding that you use olive oil for a sauce, not a tomato sauce. Ours is a medium thin crust with xtra virgin olive oil, thin sliced roma tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, ground pepper. sea salt, and fresh basil. Try it and let me know what you think.

Cartherine,

Depending on when the last time you had a margherita pizza from Boombozz, the recipe with the pomodoro sauce has existed for a least a couple of years. The staff has been trained to make the recipe per specifications. The Westport Village location being the newest store opened, would not know a recipe that did not exist to them, but I am overjoyed with there effort to accomodate you. You can request the garlic olive glaze as a substitute for the Pomi sauce.

Best, Tony

OK, I guess I'll ask what everyone has been wondering but not asking:

Good for them! I hope they have as much sucess as the one on Baxter. Will be a bit different clientele, but a new pizza place would be a good addition to that area.

I really like Papalino's...but if I am feeling lazy and want delivery, I call Spinelli's, or when I want to reminesce to my teenage days, I will pop in with a friend for 75cent PBR's LOL.
