The Brown Hotel announces a Napa Cellars Wine Dinner, 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, in the English Grill. The guest speaker will be Joe Shirley, Winemaker from Napa Cellars in St. Helena, California.

Executive Chef Laurent Géroli's 5-course California Cuisine and Wine Pairing dinner begins with a California Tomato Salad with Fried Artichokes and Honey Lavender Vinaigrette, followed by Grilled Monterey Sardines with a Meyer Lemon Garlic Caper Confit, two entrée courses of Sautéed Quail with Crispy Pancetta and a Cast Iron Roasted Beef Strip Loin, ending with a dessert of Raspberry Etager with Dark Chocolate Custard.

The selected wines for pairing with the dinner are Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Mount Veeder Chardonnay 2008, Merlot 2007, Zinfandel 2007, and “Stagecoach” Cabernet Sauvignon 2007.

Dinner is $65 per person plus tax and 20% gratuity. Seating is limited. Guests may contact Neal Ward for reservations (502) 736-2998, nward@brownhotel.com.

The Brown Hotel retail partner for this event is Westport Whiskey & Wine. At the dinner, guests will have the opportunity to order bottles and/or cases of the featured wines at a 15% discount. Orders will be available for pick-up beginning Tuesday, Aug. 10, after 5 p.m., at Westport Whiskey & Wine in Westport Village, Herr Lane at Westport Road.

California native Joe Shirley received his Master in Science in Enology from the University of California, Davis. After graduation, he launched is winemaking career at Sonoma Cutrer in 1997. He joined Trinchero Winery in 1999 as Enologist and worked his way up the ladder to become winemaker in February 2002 for Trinchero Family Selection and the Trinchero Napa wines. In 2007, Joe became head winemaker for Napa Cellars. His research on grape seed tannins was published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture. His research on the phenolic content of chocolate led to a co-authoring of a letter published in Lancet (the British equivalent of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
