RUMOR - DUI Checkpoint in St. Matts Tonight (07/09)

by Steve P » Fri Jul 09, 2010 5:12 pm

Earlier today I received information via bat phone that there will be a major DUI checkpoint on Frankfort Ave. in St Matthews from late this evening (Friday 7/9) into the wee hours of Saturday morning. This information was presented to me as "fact", however I'm going to call it a strong rumor. Due to the potential negative impact on area eating and drinking establishments I was hesitant to pass this info along, so do with it as you see fit.

I don't condone drinking and driving but neither do I condone the police state tactics that go along with these stops ("Your pay-pahs please comrade"). To repeat, this was presented to me as fact but I'm calling it a strong rumor...If you are in the area of Frankfort and Bauer in St. Matthews tonight PLEASE drink responsibly. If you have friends who frequent this area...or know local bar owners they might appreciate a a courtesy call.

I want to go through one of those just to find out how it works. Heard alot of rumors about X and Y happening, but I'd feel better about having an opinion once I had experienced one.

Just a quick "bump" in case anyone is getting ready to go out for the evening. Remember: Call or text your friends if you think they will be in this area.

If I were not 1 1/2 ways intoxicated I'd drive through just for fun.

Maybe the best thing to do is flood the area with traffic.

I wonder what would happen if you and your closest 100 or 1000 friends went through the checkpoint on a loop for a few hours? I'm guessing you'd be wanting to make sure all your you know what is in perfect order come the, let's say, 3rd time through.

I have to say, I am fairly impressed with the amount of subversives that discreetly frequent this forum!

I get it, the police are merely doing their job and the job they are doing is in the interest of saving lives, but there is a fine line to walk that divides public safety and public nuisance.

Thank you Steve P for the heads up. But remember folks, it is one thing to annoy the system and another thing to impede it entirely (i.e, just make about 5 passes through the checkpoint not 10 :D )

yes indeed there were several arrests.
if one has nothing to hide and obeying the rules of the road, then one needn't worry about getting pulled over...

EXCEPT, cops are indiscriminately "pulling over" people. It's not being pulled over lawfully at all. It's being pulled over w/o probable cause. So, it doesn't matter if you are obeying the rules or not. Still going to be "pulled over."

Are sobriety checkpoints legal? - In 1990, the United States Supreme Court declared that sobriety checkpoints did not violate citizen's Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure. They decided that when these checks are preformed with minimal intrusion under specified guidelines, the benefit of these checkpoints greatly outweighs the minor intrusion on individual's rights.

Possible sure bet that is going to be a "hot" area for a bit, especially after the numerous accidents

A couple thoughts...

I wonder if the family whose eleven year old son was run over and killed by a drunk driver a couple weeks ago here in town would approve of the checkpoints?

Steve P wrote:... police state tactics...If you are in the area of Frankfort and Bauer in St. Matthews tonight PLEASE drink responsibly. If you have friends who frequent this area...or know local bar owners they might appreciate a a courtesy call.

I don't know Steve...how about "Please drink responsibly wherever you are"???? That would seem more appropriate.

They got thirteen drunk drivers off the street. Maybe some of those folks will learn a lesson and stop drinking and driving for the rest of their lives (I bet a few of them will). Maybe some have serious drinking problems and will get treatment and turn their life around (I've seen it happen after a major event like a DUI). You're potentially doing a lot of good with this "police state" action, without all that much downside.

(But yes, I do agree that it is not a clearcut obvious decision as to whether or not to have checkpoints. Like most things in life it is a tradeoff . Balance is an important part of life)
