Brunch

by Leah S » Thu Mar 01, 2007 4:20 pm

I know there's a thread in the other room, but I thought I'd start one here.

SIL's birthday celebration will be this Sunday, for brunch. He's in the biz. Don't want to go to Emilie's because he works there and I don't want to take him to work, if you know what I mean. Seelbach and Limestone are probably too expensive for my sad little budget and I will not drive out to Old Stone Inn. We have numerous special diets in the family, so buffet is the best choice. Southern Indiana (what I call northern Louisville) is fine.

What suggestions have you got for me?

The Monkey Wrench

by Scott Hack » Thu Mar 01, 2007 4:44 pm

The only Brunch I've been to in the past 2 years was at the Monkey Wrench. They had a 2 or 3 guys playing some bluegrass music and all of the food was hot and tasty. I'm pretty easy to please, so as long as I can get some scrambled eggs and some bacon and pancakes -- I'm happy.

Yay, a new thread!

On the upscale end, Volare's brunch is great. Brunch is also probably the best time to visit the Galt House's Flagship Room for the food and the view.

In a less pricey realm, you might try Sweet Peas Southern for buffet or North End for menu brunch.

Or hit Sari Sari for its delicious and very affordable Sunday Latino brunch.

Or go partway out into the 'burbs for dim sum at Jade Palace.

I just had a note from the Monkey Wrench guys the other day indicating that they've tuned it up a bit, and it's still one of the better price bargains in town. I need to git me back over there again soon!

ahhhh, North End Café.

their brunch makes me SO happy.

they can make vegans happy, too, because they DO have a mighty fine Tofu Scramble (or at least, they DID), and I'm sure they'd be more than willing to rework some of their dishes to be critter-free.

Cafe Emilie

by Bill Veneman » Mon Mar 05, 2007 10:03 am

I finally got to Brunch at Cafe Emilie on this past Sunday. I must admit that there is some tweaking that needs to be done. It's got the basics of being a great thing, but lacks the "Umph" that would make it special.

First problem....I went in as a party of one, and they tried to seat me at one of the high bar tables....when I expressed my displeasure with that idea, they did clear a standard table for me.

Problem 2: Desserts -- Emilie, you all have an award winning Creme' Bruelle.....and yet, yesterday you had bakery cookies (hard and dry) and a tartlett that was not set.......not a good way to end the meal in my humble opinion. I would think that you'd want to showcase the kitchen talents by having the best of your best out there up front.

Now for the good stuff.......the Hot Brown was devine.......the pancake station was great (although I did notice that the chef was having problems keeping up with the orders), and the overall selection of entree's and vegies was very good. Salads were a bit sparce, but that's fine by me. When I go to a brunch, I don't want much Rabbit Food, however, I do know of some who love the salad over the entree's.

I must admit, I was a bit disapointed. Having been a great fan of dinner and lunch, Brunch was a bit of a letdown.
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!

Click this link for an article I wrote about Volare's brunch when they first started serving it. The menu may have changed some ... Unless I'm just imagining this, I seem to recall Majid telling me they pulled back on the seafood a little and added more breakfast items. But it gives an idea of what they were doing.

Went to Limestone for brunch yesterday. I found the food to be very enjoyable, but the service was kind of pokey. I really don't need a lot of attention at a buffet, but having to hunt down the "dude" who waited on us anytime anyone at the table needed a refill really detracted from the experience. On the good side, they certainly do have some kickass mashed potatoes, and the bread pudding is mighty tasty.
