San Francisco Recommends?

by Deb Hall » Thu Jul 01, 2010 5:10 pm

All,

I will be in SanFran on business in a week and looking for your top recommends. I'm looking for the following:
1. a place with great steak/ cool atmosphere ( not old-fashioned steakhouse) to take a Korean
client

2. a place with a great relaxing vibe to take my collegues (6 from all over the world) to; two of these are Asian residents so I'm thinking not Asian. A uniquely San Fran experience/neighborhood would be good here.

3. lesser expensive places for me to explore on my own ( I'll be solo for the weekend)

We'll be staying at the Hilton Union Square, if that's helpful, but have no problem ranging out..I already have a reservation at the Slanted Door for lunch on Saturday ( to combine with salivating at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market :D )

I know this is tall order, but I know y'all are up to to playing Culinary Tour Guide for me.

Thanks for your help,
Deb

Cool beer bar on Haight right next door to an awesome sausage shop that will bring you grilled sausages to have with your beers. Kinda of like Nachbar but more selections. For your solo time. ;)

Deb - read this: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6764&p=67187&hilit=+san+francisco#p67117

It's my breakdown of our weeklong trip there last summer. My favorites were probably A16, Fog City Diner, and Boulevard.

I second Jeremy's suggestion of Foreign Cinema! I just honeymooned in San Francisco in May and we had a fantastic time there. The food was wonderful and you really can't beat the ambiance, especially in the courtyard; make a reservation for around sunset and enjoy a film projected on an outdoor wall.

The Tadich Grill (240 California Street, between Battery & Front streets) is SF's oldest continually-operating restaurant....after 161 years, there must be a reason.

Great suggestions, guys! I already forwarded the info on Foreign Cinema to my VP as a potential for our team, and I'm printing this post before I leave to capture the rest. :D

Anybody know 5A5 ( steakhouse)? Sounds good and it's in the Financial district. Might be good for client meeting- as long as no one orders the Waygu ( my CFO would be unhappy)

Keep those suggestions coming,
Deb

It was the place that Irish Coffee was invented (supposedly), but I don't recommend it. We went - very overpriced, and a total tourist traip (it's across the street from the start of the street car line). The Irish Coffee was not very good, the bathrooms were literally filthy caves, and the bartender was very surly.

The wife and I enjoyed it. We thought the coffee was good and our bartender was friendly. We sat at the bar, had a coffee, and left. I can't remember the price, but it I'm thinking around $10. The place seemed to have a fair mixture of locals and tourists.

They claim to have introduced Irish coffee to America, not inventing it.
