Lunch at the Seafood Connection

by John NA » Wed Jul 11, 2007 4:30 pm

My wife read that the Seafood Connection in St. Matthew's has lobster rolls. Her family comes from Rhode Island where lobster rolls are so common that they even sell them at McDonald's. Not that they are any good at McDonald's...

The Seafood Connection has a real live lobster roll. Lots of lobster meat (real) some parsley, some lemon juice and a little mayo on a grilled hot dog bun cut at the top New England style. It's a $10 sandwich but it's totally genuine and really good. I'd rather pay $10 for real lobster on the sandwich than less for real fake lobster. A side of lobster bisque made this a bit expensive for a counter lunch, but it sure was good.

You get what you pay for and that sounds like a fair price, especially since you can't anything like that anywhere else in town.

I am going to Portsmouth NH next week for a business trip and I look forward to eating lots of these as I have never tried one but heard great things. I will compare to the Seafood Connection when I get back.

That's excellent news and a fair price. They go for $25 in NYC.

Bear in mind that while Seafood Connection is indeed "a counter lunch" by actual definition because it has a short counter and stools, it's unique in that it has an exceptional cook, Mike Hungerford, a recent Sullivan grad who really does show exceptional creativity and cooking skills. Everything he makes is a notch, or two, above "counter food," and I wouldn't except the lobster roll, which as I recall is made with all claw meat, no filler, and only enough mayo to stick the lobster together.

I don't know about the $25 NYC lobster roll but suspect Ron is talking about upscale bistros where you pay for atmosphere. I'd say $10 is about what you'd pay for a lobster roll these days at a coastal lobster shack in Connecticut or Road Island.

$25 for one at Pearl Oyster Bar. and certainly a large part of the cost of that roll is for the rent it pays to be in the West Village. No doubt they are cheaper at a lobster pound in Maine where lobsters sell for a fraction of what they do in the rest of the country.

However, with the presence of Coldwater Seafood in Louisville over on Produce Lane where you can pick up lobsters at great prices, lobster rolls should be pretty reasonable in the 'ville as well.

Mayo???? On a lobster roll???? Abomination! Bun, lobster, melted butter combined. Perfection.

Super deals at Coldwater Seafood on the culls. Not pretty enough for a restaurant tank but they make great pets. Just don't name 'em!

A perfect afternoon would be getting a lobster roll and sitting on the river enjoying it- almost like being on the coast. I've had the $25 rolls in NYC (BLT Fish is the best), but they are restaurants, and it really isn't restaurant food- it's roadside shack food. At least IMHO. Picnic tables and bees and seagulls scouring through the trash.
I can't wait to try the roll from the Seafood Connection. It sounds just downscale enough in the very best way.

I hope that I didn't give the impression that I didn't believe this lunch to be a good value. I thought it was great. An excellent lobster roll, which this one was, is definitely worth the money.
