Key West Must Do's

by Bill Veneman » Tue Jun 29, 2010 1:52 pm

Not for me (I wish)....I have a dear friend at work who is leaving Friday for a week in Key West. This is her first long length vacation in ages, and she and her beau are very much looking forward to it. Now it's been over 10 years (I hate to admit) since I've been, and those who know me will understand when I say my recollections of this trip are incredable, they are a bit hazy. They don't call it Margarettaville for nuttin'!

I've been racking my brain trying to recall some of my fav places there, and have been semi-successful....however, when I mention my "foodie forum" she practically begged me for "expert input".

As always....my thanks!
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!

We just returned from Key West last week. We tried to find some restaurants off the beaten path. We really enjoyed Mangia Mangia which is a pasta market and cafe that makes their own pasta. We liked Sarabeth's for breakfast and almost dined there for their Sunday evening fried chicken dinner. Caroline's had the best alredo pasta I've ever had. Bobalou's (unsure of the spelling) has pretty good pizza if you like well-done thin crust. I hope your friend enjoys their trip.

Oh let's see here... Key West....

Restaurants:

Ok, if you go to Key West you have to try some Cuban food and my favorite spot is Jose's Cantina on White Street. The pulled pork is the best on the island and the palomilla steak is something I could eat by the truck load. You must go here. Well, if you want.

Cuban pressed sandwiches are ubiquitous. Get one anywhere. The Cuban Mix, Media Noche... great drunk food.

Don't drink coffee while in KW. Get a cafe con leche. It's another cuban thing, its everywhere, its cheap and its awesome.

Steak? Pepe's (on Caroline St.). Actually they say the breakfast is the best part. I love the pork chop and steak combo dinner. It's been there forever and its awesome. Beautiful garden like patio. I always miss staying awake long enough to get there for breakfast but have always wanted to make it. :)

Seafood? Well, there's a bunch of places but the Rusty Anchor on Stock Island is my jam. Locals only. No tourists here. You will need to catch a cab though. It's maybe a 5 minute ride. Stock Island is like the Germantown of the Keys.

Dolphin Deli. Locals only breakfast joint on Stock Island. Kind of a dive but good breakfast.

Harpoon Harry's. Great breakfast joint near the Half Shell Raw Bar (tourist trap but good for one beer). I used to work at the Half Shell.... Harpoon Harry's rocks.

Dion's. Its a gas station on the corner of Truman and White. I eat there alot because its open at 5 am and its super cheap. It's fried chicken and mac and cheese kinda stuff. good because eating in KW is expensive. Also, be forewarned of super wastoids going in there after the bars close. It's can be like a zoo, the circus, and UFC all rolled into one.

Bars:

This list could go on forever but I'll keep it to my favorites...

Don's. Local drunk tank. It's where the pros go to get their drink on. Not many tourists here.

The Green Parrot (aka The Parrot). Maybe my favorite bar in the world. Its a locals bar off Duval. On the corner of Southard and Whitehead. I like going there before lunch.

Schooner's Wharf. Right on the water, dockside whatever. They open at 6 am. Used to be a derelict haven. Now its pretty tame. They serve food too but its pricey. I love Schooner's.

Dante's. I like Dante's. You can sit poolside and sip drinks and eat pretty good food. It's pricey but everything is down there. It's next to the Half Shell Raw Bar. I like hanging out there.

Bare Assests. Oh lordy... Locals strip club. Pure KW sleaze. Used to be out of control but its pretty tame now.

The Chart Room. This place is awesome. Hard to find. But ask a cabby and they'll take you there. It's tucked away in a ritzy hotel but you can go there. It's small but has a ton of character. Great pre game spot. It's one of the oldest bars in KW. I think someone is buried in the floor.

AVOID: Sloppy Joe's, Margaritaville, and try to avoid Bahama Village at night. It's not pleasant.

Seriously in Key West, when in doubt, just go to The Parrot. ;)

Beaches: There are a bunch of beaches but Zachary Taylor is the nicest swimming beach. I have never been there actually but I have always wanted to go. A cab will get you there or you can just walk down Southard (past the Parrot) until you hit water. It's a locals beach for the most part. Don't be shocked if the water is a bit creepy or if there is a bunch of seaweed (or oil godforbid) everywhere. KW is more of a reef than say, Miami.

Walk all over Old Town. It's beautiful. Flagler Ave., Simeonton, Whitehead, Caroline St... Rent a bike or a scooter and go everywhere. Eat a conch fritter. Keep a beer cozy handy at all times. You can circle the island in about an hour on a bike. Cheers!

You like it better than El Sibouney, Adam? That's been our go-to place in Key West for Cuban for a long time - diner atmosphere, as it should be, a good mix of Cubanos and Anglos, and away from the tourist centers yet within easy walking distance.

I'm going to save your post and take it with me when we return for our anniversary next year. We couldn't seem to find anyone that would really tell us where the locals go. What is Bahama Village? We may have been there and don't even know it.

It's a toss up really. I used to live next to Jose's so I am loyal to them. But you do have a good point about the character of El Sibouney. The diner like atmosphere is pretty neat. Good food too.

Bahama Village is the area south of Whitehead St. It's beautiful yes, (it's still Key West) but it's a little shadier than the rest of the island. Locals associate the area as the place to buy drugs but you can also find good conch fritters there during the day.

Yes. We were there two years ago and stayed in a house a block from the Parrot (between Zachary Taylor Park and the Parrot, on Southard).

Yes, don't expect to spend your Key West vacation sunning it on the beaches. Zachary Taylor park has brought in some sand, but take two steps into the water and its pure rock. Seaweed is very prevalent too. The beaches, generally, aren't great, but for public access, ZT is the best. You do have to pay, however, and each time you enter (even if you go two different times in a day). I think it's $5/person. If you drive in, it's like $10/carload or something like that.

Depending on where you stay, many hotels have their own private beaches with trucked in sand and "landscaped" shallow areas. Sunset Key, which is part of the Westin, is probably the best beach, but it's only for guests. You should eat at the restaurant on Sunset Key, however. You literally eat at white tablecloth tables sitting on the beach.

I'd agree with that. People unfamiliar with the Keys assume it's a beachy place, but really it's not. It's still one of my favorite vacation destinations, but not for sun and sand.

Ah, Key West, the "Redneck Caribbean". Food is not one of their strong points, but I did have some good swordfish down by the wharf.

This thread couldn't have come at a better time. We're leaving for Florida on Monday & will be driving up & down the Atlantic & Gulf coasts & returning on Sunday. We'll probably spend a day in the Keys.

I was skeptical, but the Butterfly Museum is awesome.
