Village Anchor review

by Mark R. » Thu Jun 24, 2010 8:21 pm

My wife and I tried the new Village Anchor and Sea Hag Pub in Anchorage tonight for dinner. We were originally planning and trying the new Anchorage Cafe next door but when we got there and the Village Anchor wasn't that crowded so we decided to try the instead. All the indoor tables were reserved for the evening so we were seated in their very pretty Veranda.

Saying that their menu is eclectic and diverse would be an understatement. Menu items range from fried baloney sandwiches to filet Mignon! The prices also very accordingly from $6.00 to $38.00 per item. I should mention that the menu is laid out very strangely with salads, appetizers and entrees intermingled on it. They have an adequate wine list with bottles ranging from about $20.00 to the mid 40's with a sprinkling of higher priced wines.

Since we were not real hungry we ordered smaller items off the list. My wife ordered a scallop appetizer with a side salad and I ordered an Anchor hot brown. The scallop appetizer was two very large scallops seared it to perfection with grilled asparagus. The dish also included a bourbon Demi-glace. My wife thoroughly enjoyed it and the salad. My hot brown was much like the original but had sourdough stuffing for the base and pulled instead of sliced Turkey. Overall it was also a very enjoyable dish.

After dinner we shared a piece of their signature carrot cake! It was certainly some of the best carrot cake either one of us had ever eaten.

Overall it was a very enjoyable but not cheap dining experience. The items mentioned above plus a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and a Makers Mark Manhattan came to $60 before tip. Printed on the folder your receipt delivered in with a statement that good service is normally rewarded with a 20% - 25% tip. While the service was good I certainly wouldn't put it at that caliber.

Downstairs they have the Sea Hag pub. It has the same menu but has a collection of over 50 bourbons and over 60 beers.

I have copies of the menus from the Village Anchor and the Anchorage cafe that I will post later.
