Just got back, and the food is quite, quite good!
Somehow it wasn't want I expected, decor-wise. There is sports memorabilia from the 1950's, and it's obviously a neighborhood hangout. We were pretty much the age demographic. From reading the review in the C-J a few weeks ago, I was expecting something hipper. The picture that was in the paper was er . . . flattering.
And let me be the first to encourage a thorough scrubbing and sprucing up of the restrooms.
And now on to the food. We each had the tuna steak sandwich and coleslaw. The tuna was cooked barely past pink but I generally like it at that point, and I'm guessing that the patrons who frequent SSB&G do too. The tuna steak was a generous cut, on a toasted bun and accompanied by a sauce that I should have looked at more. Tasty, though. The coleslaw appeared to be made in house and was very flavorful.
The iced tea was fresh, clear and plentiful. We often judge a restaurant by the iced tea. It needs to be fresh; tea mix is . . .ugh.
Anyway, we've already picked out several more items on the menu that we want to try, so we're absolutely gong back. In fact, this is going into our regular rotation. Two tuna steak sandwiches with coleslaw plus one iced tea and one diet coke came to a budget friendly $21 and change.
