This round goes to AB-InBev, as Mr. Mug Shot is no more.

by Roger A. Baylor » Mon Jun 21, 2010 9:24 pm

LEO fired me today as beer columnist for offenses against taste and decency, which is to say that my "tone" in writing is deemed pompous, snobbish and insulting to readers. I'm told these qualities make for non-entertainment, even if they're why I thought the purportedly "independent" "alt"-weekly hired me in the first place. Verily, times and people change, so:

"Under-employed former LEO beer columnist, slightly pompous, but with a large, loyal fan base desires biweekly forum for fermentable truth-telling. Pay is negotiable. You know where I am. Have beer -- will write/right."

Hmmm... one of your columns regarding porters awakened me to the beauty of pairing a porter with red meat.

Roger,

The blog leaves it sounding like you will continue writing for LEO.

So what happened after you posted that?
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

You are correct. I didn't get hauled off to the woodshed until yesterday, so there was a gap. I'd already filed the next piece, and now will take it back and publish at the blog instead.

Good call. It's both a temporary annoyance and a long term opportunity. Problem is, I don't fish. But I eat fish. Tell you what: I bring the beer, you do the fishing, you gotta drink what I bring, I gotta eat what you catch, and we both end up sassy and happy. Deal?

As posted elsewhere today, the Mug Shots column in LEO may be no more, but you still will be able to get your doses of pompous, insulting smugness. I intend to keep fit by publishing more long form beer pieces at my Potable Curmudgeon blog (beginning tomorrow, with the "lost" next un-LEO piece). I'd been saving the best ideas for the column, anyway, and now can go back to my original forum -- untethered by selective interpretations.

Of course, I'll still be looking for another paid outlet -- 'cuz daddy likes a few farthings of beer money now and again. Perhaps now I've become unemployable. Oh, well. The important thing is to be as truthful as possible about beer.

It is possible to be truthful and to educate without being pompous, snobbish and insulting to readers.

Just look at Robin's work.

You should give it a try Roger. I'm sure you're capable.

Let's just say that "pompous, snobbish and insulting" is an assessment with which I disagree. Even if true, I'm not the hypocrite in this specific instance.

I've been part of Roger's tutelage and I was struck at the sheer depth of his knoweledge. There were other speakers at the event, but I found myself thinking, 'ok, that's nice, now back to what matters.'

Sometimes when one has encyclopedic knoweledge, one can come off in print as being cocky- but it's the message that offends, not the spirit behind the pen. It's a tricky horse to ride, for sure- like Andre the giant trying to mount a minature horse...

'Dang, this thing is mighty uncomfortable"

'Man, you are on my back!'

I think the point here is if LEO wanted a toady for its advertisers, they should have hired one in the first place.

Okay, look, I hate to see Roger go, and I'd like to know more about it. As a columnist who continues to write for LEO, though, I'd rather hear from him whether he thinks the term "toady for advertisers" is fair. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've angered a few LEO advertisers with negative restaurant reviews. Without naming names, one guy threw the LEO rack out onto the street in front of his store when my review came out. Another day, a more tasteful establishment merely called and asked that the offending news racks be removed forever. Management has always stood behind me and told me not to worry about it. In my personal experience, LEO has done an excellent job of maintaining a line between critics and advertisers.

No way I'm speaking against Roger here. But based on my experience, I had to stand up and say something about the assertion that LEO Weekly expects its writers to "toady" to advertisers. If Roger agrees, Todd, that's one thing, but I await his comment, if he cares to make one.
