Asheville, NC AND Pawley's Island/Litchfield Beach

by Brad Keeton » Fri Jun 18, 2010 4:02 pm

Sorry for posting here, but I got only one response in the Travel section.

We're heading to Pawley's Island/Litchfield Beach, SC in a few weeks. Any recommendations? We plan to avoid the Myrtle Beach area entirely, so I'm not really that interested in any suggestions there unless it's a must-eat.

Also, we're stopping for one night en route in Asheville - must eats there?

Thanks.

Don't know anything about your destination but in Asheville we love Tupelo Honey and The Early Girl Eatery. Tupelo Honey is always busy but worth it if you can work it in. We've had their breakfast and lunch and thoroughly enjoyed both.

Depending on how much time you have there the Asheville Pizza Company is a cool place to have a beer and pizza while enjoying a flick in their theater. The Urban Burrito serves tasty fast mexican in the style of Bazo's, Qdoba, etc.

Hit the Moose Cafe for breakfast, or at least stop in to grab some of their apple butter. There are several things around the Grove Arcade that are really good...I'd make the drive just to go to Cats and Dawgs...catfish and 30+ kinds of hotdogs. Highly recommend hitting Chocolate Fetish if they are open when you get in town, the hours aren't too great...but some of the best chocolate I've ever had (sea salt caramels and truffles specifically). Haven't ever done anything upscale there, usually ran there on a weekend while in college...so budget was limited, but I was never hungry there!

Asheboro has a nice little place- Undercurrents. Serious folks cooking good food in an austere environment. Request Karen...

PS. I know, Asheboro is on the way, but definitely worth the stop.

During a visit to Asheville our hotel clerk suggested Bistro 1896, located on Pack Square offering a good, varied menu and when the weather is nice the outdoor dining section is a great vantage point for people-watching around the downtown area...

Brad, this area is great. I will be there for the 4th weekend as well!

Pawley's Island...Franks or Franks Outback...make reservations. Chive Blossom...reservations, High Cotton at the Hammock shops. Egg’s up Grill for breakfast, and a neat bakery is Kudzu...it’s behind the Piggly Wiggly they also have a store in Georgetown.

Murrells Inlet…they are all what you would expect in a small fishing village…fresh!

As far as a local night life scene…Hunt out the P.I.T. (Pawley’s Island Tavern) as well as the Hot, Hot Fish Club gazebo bar in Murrells Inlet.

If you want to know anything else about the area just ask.

Have Fun!

Barley's Taproom has the best beer selection we found in Asheville. A nice, fairly lengthy craft list with locals, regionals, and then some.

My In Laws live in Pawleys Island and I concur with the Frank's suggestion.

Also, I don't eat hot dogs, but there is some place there on the main strip that is supposed to be awesome and people rave about it.

We love Asheville! We always stop there overnight on the way down to Pawley's. It's kind of like an Appalachian mini-San Fransisco with a crunchy granola, bohemian vibe to it. If you have the extra day and have never been, the Biltmore Estate is well worth your time.

As previously mentioned, Tupelo Honey is quite popular and seems to be on every-one's "must eat at list" for good reason. However, they don't take reservations so the lines start forming about an hour before every breakfast and dinner service. Make a note and plan accordingly.

If you want something upscale you can't do much better than Table. A real farm to table menu that's executed flawlessly.

We also like mini-chain Doc Chey's Noodle House for some good, cheap eats

If you don't want to wait in the breakfast line at Tupelo Honey then drive down the hill to Biltmore Village and try the breakfast at the Corner Kitchen. It has yet to disappoint us

There is also quite a large farmer's market right off the expressway that is worth a visit as well.

Have fun! :D

I looked this place up - looks pretty great, but unfortunately it's in Greensboro, which is almost three hours from Asheville, and not at all en route from Louisville to Pawley's Island.

However, the couple we are spending the week with in South Carolina live in Greensboro, so I will absolutely recommend that they check it out if they haven't already.
