The Original Impellizeri's

by R. N. Dominick » Tue Jul 10, 2007 11:24 am

So, I saw people eating at Impellizeri's when I came into town on Sunday. Being somewhat new to Louisville, I was interested in seeing what it was all about. I had other things going on Sunday night, but decided to drop in yesterday and check it out.

I sat on my own at the bar -- the place was pretty filled up inside, and there were people smoking outside. Got an Amber Bock before I realized they had BBC Nut Brown Ale, but changed to that for my second beer. The place is understated inside, kind of brown, some large flat-screen TVs showing sports (a never-ending home run derby of some kind or another). A little loud, but that nice kind of busy-place buzz.

Now for the one bad point: I got there at 7:30. At 9:15, I got my pizza. That, friends, is a long wait. I finished the book I was reading ("Out", by Natsuko Kirino -- an excellent read) and had to run out to the car and get another book. (There's one of the life lessons I've learned and will happily pass along -- always carry an extra book.)

The pizza, thankfully, was great. Approaching "wonderful", actually. I got a twelve-inch "bambino" with pepperoni and handmade Italian sausage. The sausage was very tasty and not greasy at all, the pepperoni was nice and flavorful, and the cheese, while piled high, didn't overwhelm the rest. The crust was well-done, a bit crispy on the bottom, and the sauce hit a very nice note, a bit sweet but not too much so. I meant to save some for lunch today but ended up eating almost the whole thing.

I want to go back, but there's two things to take care of first. First, I want to wait a little while to let them get a few of the kinks out -- almost two hours is a long wait for pizza, no matter how good. Second, if I get pizza, I need to take friends along with me. If alone, I'm sticking to sandwiches.

We've been watching for their opening. It looked like it was mighty close to opening over the weekend, but yours is the first report - thanks. At the original, Original Impellizeri's located farther south on Bardstown Road (there's a Verizon store there now), we always thought that one slice made an entire meal for one person, so your idea to take friends is a good one. Glad to know you liked the pizza - I think the long wait will work itself out as they get their feet under them in the new spot.

Sounds just like the pies down at the old place where Jay mentioned. The long wait was a hallmark of that location as well. I learned to call ahead and place my order.

It's in the old Alameda Bar & Grill spot - 1381 Bardstown. Between Eastern and Cherokee.

It's down to an hour. I stopped in tonight and sat at the bar. There were several apologies from bar staff to patrons regarding the wait for food. I had intended to order something but when told it was ~1 hour, I passed. No one seemed to mind the wait. They have suspended carryout until they work things out.
