Best Catfish in the Area?

by Terri Beam » Sat Jun 12, 2010 1:28 pm

I did some digging around in the forums but didn't find a thread dedicated to catfish. I only found the "best fish" thread. I'm looking for the best catfish in Louisville and surrounding counties. Unfortunately most of my favorite places are a good 3-4 hour drive.

I've tried most of the "usual seafood suspects" in Louisville, but I'm sure I've missed some smaller restaurants. I tried The Fish House last weekend and enjoyed it, but it's still not exactly what I'm looking for---cornmeal breading with LOTS of pepper. I know TFH is "Green River Style" but they just didn't have that pepper punch I was looking for (and using the pepper shaker at table doesn't count for some odd reason).

I think this fixation stems back to growing up with a father in the American Legion and all the fish fries they used to have. I would usually have to drink a gallon of water afterwards, but I miss those days.

Any suggestions?

Last time I was there the catfish was very tasty.

Halls on the River in Winchester , but I've not been in quite some time. I use to go all the time when living in Lexington.

Basa has the best catfish I've ever eaten:

"Caramelized catfish claypot with smoked bacon, tamarind broth with Vietnamese celery, bean sprouts, & tomato. Served with jasmine rice"

It's 'to die for'!

What Andrew said. Basa's catfish is one of my favorite dishes in all of Louisville. I do think of it as a wintertime meal though.

Since the Fish House does not cook until ordering, tell them that you want more pepper in the cooking and I expect that it will be delivered.
