Indy suggestions

by TracyB » Fri Jun 11, 2010 8:23 am

Hello All

Heading to Indy this weekend and would like some eatery suggestions. Looking for something along the lines of a good diner/mom & pop type place with really good grub.

Just up the street from Brugge Brasserie is Broad Ripple Brewing Company, with more traditional pub grub than Brugge's Belgian-influenced dishes. BRBC's food is reasonably priced, with Scotch eggs, fish and chips, and a surprising number of vegetarian options.

You would be remiss if you didn't eat at Shapiro's at least once. If I'm in Indy, I always stop there. It's as close to a NYC style deli your going to see in the Midwest. They make everything from scratch, including the breads!
I love the chopped liver, pastrami and matzo ball soup!
The steam table options are great. If you go on Sunday, I highly recommend the Swiss Steak. After I've eaten, I'll usually order several items to bring home; as most everything they make travels well.
They are easy to find as well. Right off of I-70 exit 79. It's on the SW corner of S. Meridian and McCarty. Enjoy!

Mmmmm, Scotch eggs..... they even have a scotch egg pizza on their menu as well.... it might be the most unhealthy thing I have ever eaten.... and one of the most delicious!

Scotch egg pizza...how can ya beat that?

So many decisions, so little time. Thanks for all the suggestions. Now time to narrow them down...I might actually be able to squeeze 2 places in if I play my cards right.

Ditto for Shapiro's...but visit the original location (downtown).

And the winner is.....Shapiro's.

What a meal! Hubby & I debated over where to go thanks to everyones suggestions. Shapiro's beat out all the rest based upon the fact it was so hot out we wanted to eat light. I say light in the sense that I was light headed from all the meat. I think I actually had a case of the meat sweats....LOL

We shared a Reuben (Im drooling as I type this) on the best darned rye bread that has ever met my lips and a bowl of borscht. WOOWEE that was some tasty stuff!

After our lupper (not quite lunch time not quite supper) we waddled back up to the counter for some bread to go. We got as much as would humanly fit into our saddlebags, fired the Harleys up and headed home. As we were making our way back, we ran into a couple of fellow riders who were broke down. We stopped to see if they needed help. After about an hour of some road side ratcheting, the bikers were back in business. They helped us pick up our tools and and as we were putting them back into one of our bags, one of them said, 'whatcha got in there.....a bakery?'...we laughed and told them about the awesome sandwiches we had. I offered them some bread and there we sat...on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere ....breaking bread.
Thats whatcha call a good day!
