Son of a Sailor - Closed - Moving to Jefferson Co.

by Steve P » Wed Jun 09, 2010 5:14 pm

I've noticed for the last couple of weeks that Son of a Sailor in La Grange has been dark. On the way back through La Grange today I pulled into the parking lot and on the marquee sign was the statement: "Closed - Moving to Jefferson Co".

From what I've heard through some real estate friends of mine, Oldham Co. has given Steve B a bit of grief and/or had him jumping through a bunch of hoops over the last several months...I'm told some of it due to alcohol sale restrictions...but this is all just heresy. Still, the sign did seem to have something of an unspoken "one finger salute" about it, so who knows. Rumors aside, I do know Steve has complained before about how difficult it is to get help out that way, so maybe that had something to do with it as well.

Too bad for those of us in the O.C....another one bites the dust.

I wonder where Jefferson county they're going? Hopefully it'll be someplace closer so we can go more often. It was a major driver out there just for a nice dinner.

Hey, from Anchorage you've got a heck of a head start.

It's true, though. Steve asked me to come out there a lot, and I did finally make it for a lunch or two, but was hoping to get back for dinner. A Jefferson County location might heighten his visibility to a larger audience.

Steve, is it "heresy" or "hearsay"?

Seriously, keep us posted on any news you might hear as to their new location.

We are closed and not going to be reopening at our current location.

We just didn't have enough business during the week and lunch time to pay the bills. We are planning on reopening in the Jefferson County area if we can find a good location.

As soon as we know something we will put it on this website.

We would like to thank our loyal regular customers their support and two wonderful years.

Well there ya have it. Thanks Justin. Hope they find a nice location and can make another go of it.

Probably hijacking my own thread...I gotta say that while the "rumor" I heard about O.C. making life difficult for Son of a Sailor may not be true, the county certainly doesn't appear to lay out the welcome mat for establishments that serve alcohol. The way it was explained to me...a "non-native" and one that could give two happy damns about local politics...is that there are still a lot of people in O.C. who remain t-totally pissed about the law that allowed the county to become "moist". Apparently these folks don't miss an opportunity to make their voices heard.

Anyway...too bad about SoaS and as I said, I hope they find another home.

I'm looking forward to the move. I never made it out the the original loacation, but a move in my direction will put it on my radar.

I have to agree with Justin. Outside of Texicans, there ain't much that warrants a drive out of my way to eat in Oldham County with so many other options closer to the house.

Well, you are then missing some great food. Steve had a really nice place with a quality product. Red Pepper deli in La Grange and Crestwood. Steve O's. Arbor Ridge, and there is one other place that seems to escape my mind..... Oh yeah.
Give Oldham County a try you may find you like the little mini escape from Louisville.

What is the diameter of your radar? Does it have a problem picking up restaurants beyond Jefferson County?.....in any direction?

Mark R. wrote:It was a major driver out there just for a nice dinner.

As Robin noted, it wasn't that far....probably not more than a few minutes longer than other places you frequent for a "nice dinner". Once one is in the car, does it really matter if the drive is 18 minutes not 14?

I agree and not just in Oldham County. This area's perception of what is far is truly amazing. Across the river or a county line and OMG people feel like they have to renew their passport and pack an over night bag. Yet, many of those areas are reached faster than the time it takes to go from Mockingbird Valley to the Highlands.

Metro Louisville has wonderful restaurants. Be a foodie. Explore all there is to offer; not just your backyard.

My sincere appologies to Justin and Mark. Those comments, or variations of them, have been posted many a time by others.

I don't have a really good answer for you. I don't have a distance rule, I just drove to Texicans a few weeks ago. Your right, OC is not much, if any, more of a drive then most places I go. I'm just never in OC for any other reason. I work downtown, live in Lyndon, and tend to dine in those areas. It is just a habit that I head west to eat. The wife and I were just talking about why we never head east to ea,t after a great meal at Taj Palace. It is a 5 minute drive, but it seemed much further in our heads than driving to FABD, which is about a 10 minute drive. Crazy, I know.

Neil,
Obviously there is some validity to your statements but I don't consider a restaurant like Son of a Sailor to be a destination type restaurant. Yes, they have good food and are great place to eat but they're not a place to spend more time than required to eat. Others, like Westport General Store are because you can spend a significant amount of time there eating and enjoying the evening.

Most of the restaurants we frequent on a regular basis are within about 15 minutes of our home and less than 7 or 8 miles away. Of course we travel much further than that for destination restaurants. It would be nice if Son of the Sailor moved close enough to become one of our regular haunts.

Also as Justin pointed out we go to other areas to do something else and then eat in that area. None of our travels regularly take us to OC.

Justin and Mark -
Truly, I wasn't picking on you specifically.

Also, while it would be great if folks from Jefferson County would come our way more often.....I was saying that those same people should look in all directions. I am certain that NABC, for example, would appeciate it if folks would cross the river as easily as they cross the Watterson. How about places in Bullit County?

People who live in surrounding areas frequent Jefferson County restaurants, but the same can not be said for the reverse. This is not the case in other metro areas that I have lived in ( 8 - count'em...8 ) and I find it.....shall we say...unusual.

Why go further than the places within a few minutes of my home? Any restaurant can be a place of socializing and be an event. If someone is going out for a meal, why not consider any restaurant....in any direction....spending the time available, while you enjoy the company of your family or friends. Many of the people on this forum only think within a small area of this metro area....and I think they are losing out.

I think one of the reasons people in Louisville don't travel very far out of the area for restaurants is at least partly because of the wealth of great restaurants we have here. Also in other metropolitan areas where I've lived I've had reasons to go to outlying areas for other reasons, something I don't find here. Not that I ignore outlying restaurants, we just don't find a need to go there even though they may be excellent restaurants.

We've traveled to several restaurants in OC and Shelby county but I don't believe we've ever been to Bullit county to eat! Heck we've lived in Louisville 12 years and there are still restaurants here we want to go to that we haven't yet gone to!
